Demographics

Is the SFV really 68% non-Hispanic white and 15% Hispanic, as stated in the article? I had thought the white and Hispanic populations were about equal. 108.254.160.23 (talk) 23:12, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

I think you could be right. Here Brad Sherman has 2008 figures from the census that show

White – 41.8%

Latino – 42.4%

African-American – 3.6%

Asian – 10%

The article claims its figure comes from the 2010 census, but I can't figure out how to get just SFV info apart from LA on the census website. On the other hand, maybe Sherman's just talking about the part of the valley that's in LA, in which case I suppose the figures in the article are plausible since the non-LA valley is probably over 90% white. "Silicone Valley"

Imveracious says "Another nickname is unneeded especially when it's a confusing one such as 'Silicone Valley'" [1]. I say it's noteworthy, as evidenced by its mention in books and newspapers. Confusion can better be cleared up by explanation than by silence. —rybec 20:19, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

The name was already in use to describe the well known area when the source article was written. Also, your source reads "The San Fernando valley has become the focal point of the porn industry since the 1970s. It has been dubbed the San Pornando valley and Silicone Valley, a play on the prevalence on artificially enhanced breasts." The nicknames that are now used in the article refer toward the subject of the section of which they appear, Adult entertainment. By reading your source, your proposed edit as stated refers to ...the prevalence on artificially enhanced breasts.

In short, I believe the section reads well as it is and does not need more although you may find others who think as you and want that added. Therefore I ask for a consensus on this. Let us read if other editors believe it should be added or not.

Yes, the term "Silicone Valley" is a very common misnomer for "Silicon Valley", a nickname for the Santa Clara Valley. I hadn't read the Guardian article (added by John Vandenberg), but the explanation from it may help clear up any potential confusion. The article is saying that the porn industry is prevalent in the San Fernando Valley and that enlarged breasts are prevalent in porn, thus the nickname. Unstated is that it's obviously also a play on "Silicon Valley"; do we need to explain that as well? If so, are other sources needed? —rybec 05:32, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

From what I can tell in book search, "silicone valley" for the San Fernando Valley porn industry is a quite rare pun compared to the common error for Silicon Valley. Can we really say this is reliably sourced? Dicklyon (talk) 06:04, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
