Poisoning

Does anyone really take this idea seriously? Perhaps it was never "proven nor disproven", but since when to crackpot theories need to be proven? Thmazing (talk) 22:40, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really how any individuals personally feel about it—whether they believe it to be true or not—but the accusation by William Smith is notable enough to be mentioned in most modern accounts of his life and death. Apart from sources published by the LDS Church or its leaders, I've never seen a biographical source that doesn't mention it. (It's understandable why the LDS Church sources wouldn't mention it, since the crackpot-ism is targeted at accusing some people who became prominent members in that church.) It was one of the major reasons William Smith was so much against the LDS Church for the rest of his life. Some say he already hated Brigham Young and this was just another "reason" he gave for it. In any case, I think it's brought up enough to be mentioned in the article. However, I would have no objection to changing the sentence to simply state that "the theory was never proven", since I agree with your statement on the general non-necessity of proving conspiracy theories wrong. What do you think of the change I made? Thmazing (talk) 05:23, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably OK, in my opinion. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:35, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name of article

[edit]

I've moved the article back to "Samuel H. Smith (Latter Day Saints)" because from a rough google search "Samuel H. Smith" appears to be more commonly used for this person than the full name "Samuel Harrison Smith". For example, a search for "Samuel H. Smith" and Mormon yields more hits than a search for "Samuel H. Smith". I checked the text of History of the Church for historical usages, and from what I can see it uniformly refers to him as "Samuel H. Smith", as do references in the Doctrine and Covenants as well as modern LDS Church manuals and periodicals. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:59, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
