[edit]I just think that some statements are.................well ,wrong. At the time of the January 6 1999 attack on freetown, Johnny Paul Koroma was a prisoner of Sam Bockarie and The RUF had nothing to do with that invasion. It started as a spontanious idea of Saj Musa, then leading a group of soldiers, ex-cons and civilians (mostly youths from the west side of freetown)who had fled the nigerian led intervention in february of that year to escape retribution from those they had supressed during AFRC rule. Saj got killed probably by those closest to him about 12-15 miles from freetown at benguema. From there it was just plain thuggery.Get in the city, loot, rape, kill anyone you disliked. There was no organization to the attack. They probably would have succeded in taking over the whole city if there was a disciplined leadership as when they entered the city most of the Nigerian ECOMOG fled to the western part of town or Lungi. Sam Bockarie took advantage by calling the BBC (because he had a SAT phone) and claiming he was going to burn embassies and the sort. In reality he was nowhere near there or had anything to do with the faction raising hell in freetown as they were allready at loggerheads over the imprisonment of Johnny P Koroma. Damn. History is so easy to change .
