Computing: Networking Low‑importance

Exaggerated claims?

Recent changes to the article include some claims that are not supported by the cited sources and which I feel are untrue. Specifically:

The Southeastern Universities Research Association network (SURAnet) ... was the first TCP/IP network to sell commercial connections, making it arguably the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) when IBM Research in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina was connected in 1987-1988.

MichNet, the NSFNET regional network in Michigan operated by Merit where I worked as Associate Director, had connections to the research centers at GM, Ford, and Chrysler at about this time. Hard to say which was first.

As part of the NSFNET backbone, SURAnet was the first regional network to become operational.^[1]

MichNet has been operational since the early 1970s and supported TCP/IP starting in the 1980s.
