FIRST MISSION OF THE PANTHER AND HE WAS HIT
[edit]The SMS PANTHER first mission was to block Venezuelan ports in 12-9-1902. Others germans battleships as Gazelle, Falke, Vineta, Sperber, Batter, Stush and Charlotte were comissioned as well in that mission. The block of Venezuela in 1902 was a operation lead by England, German and Italy suposly to claim the downpayment of an large and old debt of the southamerican country. Some history books and articles claim that this movement of englands and germans boats was a strategic manouver to see how far United States was commited with their Monroe Doctrine. The SMS PANTHER fougth with the fortress of San Carlos, near Maracaibo, where it was hit by the venezuelan artillery and was force to retreat to Curazao for repairs. There are many books on this topic, many of them are part of the venezuelan history. I suggest to see for example, http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloqueo_Naval_a_Venezuela_de_1902-1903 from spanish wikipedia, http://www.fav-club.com/articulos/bloqueo/bloqueo.htm from an army club in venezuela... If you like i can find you the names of the books in spanish Jose Puerta 10-21-09 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.210.134.23 (talk) 22:36, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
Gunboat diplomacy
[edit]I removed this explanation of "Gunboat diplomacy":
- a term used especially by the British, first in 1850 with the British display of naval power at Piraeus. The term refers to diplomatic demands backed up by a show of force
It seems unnecessary here. Anyone interested in learning more about the phrase can click the link to the Gunboat diplomacy article.
