The S.P.I.T. Book: Scales, Patterns, Inversions, Triads is a copyrighted 2006 Book of music theory by Dr. Mark Shellhammer and Dr. E. Jane Shellhammer. The purpose of the methodology is to assist musicians in gathering the musical tools necessary for improvisation. While the tools of improvisation have been in use for a very long time, it is only recently that some of the most basic tools have been compiled in such a way that allows the musician to visualize in a simple four line fashion what scale, pattern, inversion, and triad fits a particular chord. By using the S.P.I.T. methodology, a musician incorporates freely various parts of the four lines into the melody. Along with learning the tools of improvisation, using the scale, pattern, inversion, and triad to accentuate the melody helps the beginning musician keep their place in the music and not get lost(Yatz Havacru (talk) 06:06, 5 January 2008 (UTC)).
