are u sure he was born on oahu? his books mention the plantations on KAUA'I a lot.

also, i am not sure it is accurate to describe him as "native-born american citizen". he was definitely 2nd generation (as opposed to immigrant japanese, etc), but HI was a territory not a state at the time. i suspect he only became a full citizen (like my mother-in-law!) upon statehood.
