[edit]Sider is an important figure in late-20th-Century American Christian thought, but portions of this entry read like a press release. Editing and Wikifying needed.
Under "Family" there is a very unkind comment that "He likes to eat turds." Please edit and remove this comment.
Connection with Rios Montt?
[edit]As I recall in the early 80s Sider, or some of his fellow travelers, were promoting the idea that Guatemalan president Rios Montt was some kind of a humanitarian and progressive figure. When at the time I mentioned to a couple of them allegations that he was involved in massacres of peasants, they were incredulous. Currently Montt is on trial for having committed genocide during his rule.Tom Cod (talk) 17:58, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- Perhaps your recollection could be bolstered with some reliable sources. Without that, it's essentially defamatory. Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:53, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
- The source for my recollection are followers of Sider with whom I lived for a couple months in 1983 and interacted with for some time thereafter during the 80s. I'm not trying to suggest that they were complicit in Montt's crimes, but that they and this naive evangelical milieu were taken in by him and forces around Reagan. Sure, the fact that I personally heard them make these statements is not a sufficient credible source for an article, but it justifies this comment here on the discussion page as perhaps others may have similar recollections that can be brought forward. Thanks. Tom Cod (talk) 06:02, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Have any of these followers written anything about it? If so, that would be a verifiable source. If any of them were written-up in a major publication, that would be a reliable source. Word-of-mouth, regardless of how many are provided, will simply be reverted. I would start by finding reliable sources to confirm their statements about Montt and work forward from there. - Point well taken. I wasn't intending to put anything in the article on that basis.Tom Cod (talk) 14:18, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Criticism section
[edit]The "Criticism" section only has criticism from one group, the Christian Reconstructionists. However, the article about said group states that A. it is dead, and B, it was very obscure. Having read the article concerning them myself, I would have to say that while they have a criticism of Ron Sider, they would also have a criticism of almost every other Christian speaker and or Denomination. As such, I question the usefulness of having this section there, or at least I would suggest broadening it to include other criticisms that may come from more mainline denominations.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Johferg (talk • contribs) 03:12, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
