Rome New York's name

why is so much emphasis place on "mystery" surrounding the name of the town in the first paragraph? I've read in local history books (available in any local library) that the town was renamed along with many other Greek/Roman town names in central new york. it's not a "mystery," it was renamed to make the town seem nicer. i just think its stupid that its dwelled on for two sentences, its not important. why were any towns in america named what they were? someone find that book i read and put the reference in, or else get rid of the whole mention of the "mystery" of the name altogether. cazenovia, manlius, syracuse, camillus, utica, marcellus, cicero, etc. were all named after ancient cities. so was rome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.10.244.98 (talk) 23:36, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Rome, NY in "Jericho"

As someone who has grown up in Rome, I decided to watch the complete first season (well, only 21 out of 22 hours, as one was a "recap" episode) of Jericho this weekend. While it's one of my new favorite shows, I was disappointed to find that Rome, NY was not actually mentioned as per the article.

Maybe I missed it so if someone could verify that it is indeed mentioned by name (perhaps mention which episode) that would be good. --Champthom 04:41, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

What about Rome, NY?

I would love to hear what anyone has to say about Rome. I was born in Rome many, many years ago and am now considering returning to my real home. Anything you have to say about Rome and your experiences in Rome, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. K

I grew up in Rome. To be honest w/ you, since the base closed, there's really nothing there anymore. It's the dollar store/grocery store capital of central ny...lol Taxes are high in Oneida County now-it's up to 9.75%.(the highest in NYS) Job market isn't very promising either. I lived in Rome from 1947 to 1959 (Born in Gloversville, ny 1938). My father owned "Wittig's Ice Cream Store" at 503 N. James St. I graduated R.F.A. (highschool) in 1957 and left Rome for the Air Force in 1959. I am presently married to Patricia (Roscoe) Pritchard, who worked as a waitress at the "Plaza Resturant" on E. Dominic. Some of her family still live there. Pat and I come to Rome once a year for a month or so. We Live in Locust Grove, Ga., 35 Miles south of Atlanta on I-75. Stay away, there is no reason to go back. remember "The muck", Liberty gardens and south James street in the 60s and 70s? The entire city is like that now. The 70s gresers from the east side are now pathetic old men still working on the same 1967 Chevelle they used to park in McDonalds 35 years ago, are still living vicariously off bar fights they watched but never got into, and are just as ignorant and juvinile as they were then. God awful place

Infobox photo

I've uploaded a good picture of the Courthouse in downtown Rome to commons. I think it makes a better symbol for the city than the Fort Stanwix reconstruction, and will substitute it shortly if nobody objects. OK, I've made this change. I like the Courthouse photo because the building is a handsome, historic (1851) Greek Revival structure that is consistent with the choice made around 1796 to name the town "Rome". Easchiff (talk) 15:14, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
