Notability?

[edit]

A Google search on this name gives 52[1] or 75[2] hits in English, and 7 of those hits are from Wikipedia, and several of the other hits are from answers.com, the Norwegian phone book or other lists, auctions or private websites. I cannot find a hit that proves any notability/significance.
The artist is maybe notable on a local level, and should be mentioned in the local Wikipedia, but I will suggest deletion from the English if no good arguments to keep. Amarone 17:39, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to the current criteria for notability for artists, "A piece acquired by government (national, state or major city) and put on public display" This applies to several works. Rolf Groven's works have been acquired by The National Gallery of Norway 1979 (owned by the government), Riksgalleriene (now part of Gallery of contemporary art). His art has been sold as (at least) 50 000 posters in Scandinavia, Germany and Spain during the 80s. He is one most printed artists in Norwegian School textbooks, at least 35 editions according to the Copyright agency BONO. Amarone, if you insist on disputing notability, I'll have to ask other Norwegian speaking wikipedians, since I'm not impartial.

I don't think there's any point asking other Norwegians - I do not question whether Rolf Groven's notable in the Norwegian cultural life. Amarone 19:31, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Groven seems to meet the criterias for notability for artists. It is a common problem that some artists do not give that many hits in a google search. A google search should therefore not be used as the primary way of measuring the notability of an artist. Kjetil_r 22:51, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have very strong opinions about Mr. Groven as such, I just noticed that there are 11/13 names on the list of Norwegians/paintings and sculpture, and the other names are names like Edvard Munch and Gustav Vigeland. Therefore it seems to me as this article is not primarily made to improve this encyclopedia, but to advertise for this person.
We all know that all more or less serious Norwegian artists are represented in the collection of the Norwegian National Gallery - it's one of the galleries main functions to acquire pieces & document activity - and this to a higher degree than in other countries.
I am not questioning Mr. Groven's skills, just wondering whether all Norwegian artists then should be mentioned in the English-spoken Wikipedia - are our national hero's internationally notable? I wish, but I think not.
Please read also the other criterias for notability[3][4] and tell me if you really think the article about Groven belongs on this Wikipedia - if you still do, we have a huge job in front of us, writing about more notable artists that are not yet mentioned here.
