Incorrect "motion-capture" attribution

[edit]

The MCU's Rocket was not motion-captured. All the animations were keyframe animations - i.e. done by hand - with the artists at Framestore taking the lead. Here's various references from over the years and across the movies:

Animation World Network - Stephane Ceretti Talks Rocket, Groot and the VFX of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ "We didn’t use any performance-capture for Rocket or Groot on the film. What we did on-set for Rocket was use Sean Gunn, James’ brother, who is a very good actor, to interact with the other actors."

Post Magazine - Method creates Rocket, Groot for Guardians 2 "To make the CG raccoon emote convincingly, Method artists used in-house footage of Method animation supervisor Keith Roberts performing the scene for reference, studying the macro facial movements like minor eye darts or blinks, in addition to what was filmed on-set and in the sound booth by actor Bradley Cooper, who provides Rocket’s voice. Artists then translated the performance to Rocket using keyframe animation, making adjustments once his fur was added. There was no motion capture shoot data."

ACM Digital Library - The making of Marvel Studio's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

YouTube - How to Create Believable Character Animation in Maya (GotG Vol. 3)

YouTube - Webinar: The Unique Performances of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 17:50 timestamp: "So, all of the creature anim on Guardians 3 is hand-keyed by animators. So you might see the reference and conclude that it's actually motion capture. But at Framestore we tend not to use motion capture for hero work."

Screenrant - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 VFX Supervisor On Rocket's World & The High Evolutionary's Fate "So we design these characters. In order to shoot the scenes we actually did some sort of a virtual production, I would say. There's no motion capture in the film. It's all hand animated, but we put the actors on this on a little set that was oversized because the actors obviously are bigger than an otter."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: Stephane Ceretti – Production VFX Supervisor - Marvel Studios - The Art of VFX "It’s still hand animated. Everything is hand animated. There’s no motion capture or retargeting or anything like that. So that hasn’t changed from the previous films."
