Was it wise for the leader of the Anglican Church in Ireland to accept a peerage from the John Major's government? I think not, indeed I feel it was a catostrphic blunder. The Church of Ireland was by law disestablished in 1870 thus ending the travesty of a minority church being a burden to the rest of Christian Ireland. Doctor Eames wrote a book on the subject of disestablishment and yet showed an utter lack of discernment when he became the first Lord to be a bishop in Ireland since 1870. In an over sensitive land surely this was at best an error of judgement and at worst crass and self-serving.

Every square inch of Ireland is represented by a Church of Ireland parish and around a quarter of the diocese of Armagh is in the Irish Republic what exactly was Robin Eames thinking of when he accepted this award? Can it be that under the veneer of ecumanism and cross-community sweetness there lies a dyed-in-the-wool unionist? The law faculty at Queens University Belfast would seem to produce nothing other than legalistic unionists with political ambition high on the agenda, it should be no surprise therefore that the Archbishop should be so insensitive. Eames was well known to be Margaret Thatcher's "favourite anglican bishop" thank God he did not get Cantebury.

Lastly there is the thorny question of those who work for the Kingdom of God being seduced by the baubles of Babylon. Within the Church of Ireland we have often cast a superior smirk in the direction of Ian Paisely and his political ambitions. At least the Big Man is an honest to God street hardened politician no matter what we may think of his politics. Doctor Eames has let himself and his church down badly by accepting reward from the British Establishment and so nailing his archepiscopate to their mast. I hope his successor will have more sense.
