I've taken out the reference to Croft being run out on 10th August 2006 for failing to run his bat in. This is not so unusual an occurence in cricket and not note-worthy enough to merit a mention in the article, it is just one minor incident in a long career. Jules1975 16:23, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Nationality

I've reverted his infobox to say "English". I know full well that he's Welsh, of course, but cricketing nationalities aren't the same as ordinary ones (see West Indies, for example) and he represented England at the highest level. In any case, at Test level (which is what matters as it's the highest standard Croft has played at) England incorporates Wales (hence England and Wales Cricket Board). Then the title of the box should reflect this by saying in it's title something like: 'Test Info' rather than 'Personal Info'. But I do not think the info should be based on the 'highest level' achieved. If you asked Crofty which nationality he would chose, I KNOW that he would reply something like 'Welsh, of course! Shivnarine Chanderpaul would doubtless say much the same about his Guyanese nationality - and he has played for Guyana at first-class level many times - but Guyana don't play Tests, and so for cricketing infobox purposes his nationality is West Indian. Cricketing nationality, legal nationality and "heartfelt" nationality can be three different things (after all, nobody can be a "British" cricketer, however pro-UK they may be) and it's the first of those that matters for the infobox. I suppose it would actually be more accurate given the jurisdiction of the ECB to say that his cricketing nationality is "England and Wales", but none of the governing bodies or reliable sources do this, so we can't either. As far as the ICC, the ECB, Cricinfo et al are concerned, Croft's cricketing nationality is "England". Loganberry (Talk) 23:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Excactly. I agree with what you say. My point is that we should state the nature of this info (as I stated above) i.e. to make it clear that "This box refers to information provided by ICB regarding Test play rather than the player's own personal answers." That would be a substantial change to the agreed position on these things, certainly for cricket and I think for other sports too, so I doubt it will happen. You can raise it at WT:CRIC of course, but I doubt the current position is going to change. Apart from anything else, the top level at which a player has played isn't always Test cricket, even if he or she is an international. Ed Joyce, an Irish cricketer listed as English, is an example.
