Additional sources
[edit]Lest it be thought this cave system/expedition was largely undocumented prior to September 2015, and with an eye towards WP:RECENTISM, here are some older/additional sources that may provide useful info and perspective.

Proposed merge with Underground Astronauts
[edit]Per WP:BLP1E: " Being in the news does not in itself mean that someone should be the subject of a Wikipedia article." While these women certainly were part of an exciting (and well publicized) discovery, I don't think any yet meet independent notability guidelines. No disrespect intended, but many are just starting their careers. Unless significant, third party, non-Homo naledi related coverage exists, I think it most prudent to redirect all to Rising Star Cave. --Animalparty! (talk) 08:09, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- The article Underground Astronauts is not even a BLP. It's about a team not one scientist. --Marvel Hero (talk) 08:19, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
::Is there independent notability of the team? It's about people directly involved with the Rising Star Expedition, and only known to the world at large because of it. They are all living persons, so BLP1E and WP:SINGLEEVENT still apply, and while a single team article makes more sense than having 6 individual articles (which would largely be about the same event), I still think it best to centralize information, unless or until the point they become separately notable beyond the September-October 2015 news wave. --Animalparty! (talk) 08:30, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
On second thought, I'm going to back off on this for now. I'm wiling to give it time to develop, and let others evaluate it. Withdrawing my proposal. All the best, --Animalparty! (talk) 08:42, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- In fact, this female team is part of the Rising Star Cave Expedition. I find it an overkill to make a separate article based on their nickname (underground astronauts). Cheers, BatteryIncluded (talk) 00:22, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
2017 Update needed
[edit]In the light of the recent (May 2017) papers published both on the Dinaledi specimens, (dating them to between 335,000 and 236,000 YBP) and those discovered in the nearby Lesedi chamber (also part of the Rising Star complex), plus the species as a whole, this article needs significant revision/enlarging. The relevant papers are cited in the Homo naledi article, which has started to incorporate some of the newer findings. Doing so exceeds my own current Wiki-skills.
- [Edited to add: Berger et al returned to Rising Star in September 2017 to conduct further excavations in both Dinaledi and Lesedi. Once details are made public, updating this article will become even more necessary. I'll do my best once the information is available. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.60.183 (talk) 17:45, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Orientation of passages
[edit]In subsection Discovery of fossils in Dinaledi Chamber is a statement that recreational cavers found a narrow, vertically oriented "chimney" or "chute." By the description, this is the Superman Crawl, which, like the Dragon's Back, is nearly horizontal. Is this some geological or speleological convention of which I am unaware, or did someone get dizzy? J S Ayer (talk) 22:08, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
To add to article
[edit]To add to this article: information about the geometrical engravings on the walls of certain chambers of the Rising Star cave system, which was released to the public on June 5, 2023. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 22:41, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
- Done. -- GreenC 01:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
carvings
[edit]could be to maneuver in the dark via “feeling” the markings on which way to go. And only have to carry very little for one purposeful fire. 2600:1700:7890:69CF:7DFA:56DB:3E4F:ED25 (talk) 14:54, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- That's a fair idea, to explain the origin as bread crumbs, and over time they become more elaborate, the original purpose lost to time. For Wikipedia purposes it's WP:OR but maybe there is a source for this somewhere it doesn't need to be about this particular cave. -- GreenC 16:25, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
