Governor of Riga in the 1910s
[edit]From Servet-i Funun I found an "M. Von Alten" was governor circa 1917 https://archives.saltresearch.org/bitstream/123456789/129156/677/PFSIF9171108A220.jpg Might be good if people are researching the city's past WhisperToMe (talk) 07:19, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
The name Riga could come from the Nordic word for "rig" "rigge" (“to bind up; wrap around; rig; equip”).

General state of the article
[edit]Why is it so bad? Just compare it to the articles dedicated to Vilnius or Tallinn, or any other EU capital really, it's just so bad, and it doesn't seem like anyone is working on it. Stavanger, a small city that's not even a capital and is nowhere near as historically notable has a much better article written about it. 64.43.50.56 (talk) 14:10, 8 January 2023 (UTC)
- If you want to improve it, then go ahead, WP:BEBOLD and improve it, I guess. Also, sidenote: I think Vilnius is in worse condition than this article- Vilnius has TONS of grammar issues and desperately needs c/e (currently working on copy editing it right now). And don't even get me started on Klaipeda- that one is probably the worst vital article I ever saw. -- Shadow of the Starlit Sky 03:56, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Russian spelling
[edit]SummerKrut added the Russian spelling in this edit [1] with the edit summary restored Russian name that was removed for no reason
. There has been a back and forth with Russian/Ukrainian edit summaries that included personal attacks. "Restored" implies that it was recently removed, but I couldn't find an edit that removed it. At least in the last few months, it was never there. I'd appreciate @SummerKrut showing the edit that removed it as otherwise the edit summary is misleading. Russian isn't an official language of Latvia
. AncientWalrus (talk) 00:48, 23 September 2023 (UTC)- 1) A crime committed 10 years ago is no different from one committed now.
- 2) Chernivtsi, Gdansk, Strasbourg — all have names in unofficial languages because in all of them such languages either had a great role in their history or are widely spoken. Russians constitute more than a third of Riga's population, so I see no reason not to include a Russian name. Summer talk 13:29, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for explaining your reasons. Having consulted WP:NCPLACE including Russian appears to be justified as there are indeed many Russians living in Riga.
Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted.
. It would be very helpful if you included relevant policy and reasoning in the future when you (re)add the Russian name to other cities. AncientWalrus (talk) 17:13, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

- Russian language banned in Latvia, you can not use it in this article 2A02:A45E:72A7:1:DABB:C1FF:FEAC:7283 (talk) 11:05, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
