Search and rescue

[edit]

Rescue services are provided by the Fairmount Fire Company, North Mountain Rescue Team, Mildred Technical Rescue Team; Sweet Valley Ambulance and Mildred Ambulance Services. Mildred Ambulance Service provides a special 6 wheel vehicle that can transcend the parks trails and service roads for quick extraction. Together with the well trained park officers and local emergency volunteers, visitors to the park can be assured they are in good hands in the event of an accident...or lapse in common sense.

Excellence freely licensed images

Here is an excellent source of 600+ freely licensed images of this park:[1].--GrapedApe (talk) 03:25, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - there are already several of these images in the article (I know several of the waterfall pics are from Doug). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:10, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mammals

[edit]

I propose some edits to the mammals section. The content of the section deviates from the topic at times, mentioning non-mammal creatures: "Less common creatures include Beaver, Bobcat, Coyote, Fisher, Mink, Muskrat, Red Fox, River Otter, and Timber Rattlesnake. Ricketts Glen is also known for its wild flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies." At the least these two sentences should say something like "also, non-mammal species include..." Thoughts?

Additionally, some of the history and facts of the PA White-tailed Deer take away from what should be the topic sentence of paragraph two. The intent of this paragraph is to show how PA's White-tailed history relates to what is found in the park now. Yet, the first clause of the topic sentence focuses the paragraph on the much broader topic of PA's complicated White-tailed history and problems, instead of making Ricketts Glen the focus. Perhaps the topic should be mentioned in the wiki article on PA (w/ an added ecology section) or some other topic. Also, some of the facts mentioned throughout seem out of place or unconnected to the subject of the paragraph. At the least these two sentences need to be connected to the topic better or they should be removed: "Pennsylvania's deer population today is descended from the stock introduced since 1906" and "The White-tailed Deer became the official state animal in 1959."

I am willing to attempt rewrites for this section. Jpmarkel (talk) 13:21, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks (and welcome to Wikipedia!). I have rewritten the first paragraph along the lines you suggested, moving all non-mammal animal species to the last sentence and changing that to "In addition to mammals, Ricketts Glen is also known for its Wild Turkeys, wild flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, and the occasional Timber Rattlesnake." There is still a mention of Wild Turkey in the third paragraph (its population's fall and rise is similar to that of the Black Bear), but I think that is OK.
It is much better. Thank you for considering my suggestions. The only part that is still a little disconnected is the first sentence: "Ricketts Glen State Park was named part of an Important Mammal Area because it "support[s] critical habitat for a wide range of mammals"; Pennsylvania has 64 wild mammal species." The clause after the semicolon isn't linked to the first clause of the topic sentence. What about this after the quotation: "[...] wide range of mammals," containing many of Pennsylvania's 64 wild mammal species." I'm not married to that suggestion, but I'm trying to think in a way that connects the two clauses together. --Jpmarkel (talk) 14:36, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am thinking about the deer (second) paragraph. One issue is that this is a Featured Article and has to follow what has been published in reliable sources, which mostly focus on the whole state, though there is some information on the park and its surroundings. Let me mull this over a bit. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:27, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I rewrote parts of the deer paragraph. I made the first sentence focus more on Ricketts' land and the local extinction of deer there, and removed the sentence about the deer population today being descended from the reintroduced animals. I replaced that sentence with a stat that deer numbers in the state went from about 1000 in 1905 to about 1,000,000 in 1928 or so. I left the sentence about the deer being the state animal in there - I think it provides a nice contrast (hunt the critters to near extinction, import them from Michigan, name them state animal, and now they are threatening to eat up much of the forests. What do you think? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:01, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, and thanks again for considering my suggestions. The edits have improved the deer sections, resulting in a focus on their impact to the park. My final comment is about the third and final paragraph. I still feel this very broad or general information doesn't quite fit here. As currently written, the only part that has impact on Ricketts Glen is this: "In 1995 and 1996, 39 Fishers were released in the State Game Lands adjoining the park, and breeding populations appear to have been reestablished.[103]" If all the details of this paragraph have to remain, I would suggest working them into sentences that show their relevance to the park. For example, broadly speaking of PA's "reintroduced" species after mentioning how this has impacted Ricketts Glen: "[...] 39 Fishers were released in the State Game Lands adjoining the park as part of efforts to reestablish locally extinct species." If the issue is proper sources and citing, I can look into some good PA Game Commission resources. They have many good articles and PDFs on their website, which I bet will address the effort to reintroduce these various species. --Jpmarkel (talk) 14:36, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Important Bird Area

[edit]

In this section, the number of species of birds recorded in this state park is 75. I don't know the correct number, but 148 species have been recorded in the park by users of eBird.
