More dirt needed
[edit]Douglas' nasty treatment of Blanshard is a whole story in and of itself; I'm surprised there's no mention of it here but I guess that's because the source is mostly the Dict of Cdn Biog; I'll try and flesh it out using Akrigg and a couple of other sources I have on hand here. Other than being forced to live on a cattle ship, and then in a leaky room in the fort, Blanshard finally left; apparently he also was your sensitive aesthete type and envisioned something like an arts colony, a "New Athens" on the Pacific, but I'll dig up more on that as it's not in Akrigg; I heard it on CBC long ago. The "near Port Hardy" thing concerns the coal strike at Fort Rupert, I think, and the shelling of the Nahwitti village there in retribution for the killing of a couple of miners who had fled the fort when it looked like the Royal Navy (or Marines?) were going to attack.Skookum1 21:48, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
excellent resource for detailed expansion
[edit]As with other BC bios using on the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online, content of this article is terse and kinda vague on details. This chapter in Gosnell & Scholefield's A History of British Columbia, publ 1913, has plenty to flesh out this article as it one day should be, for those so inclined. The end of the preceding chapter also has some relevant information.Skookum1 (talk) 07:51, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
