[edit]I have chosen the editing talk: Rice cultivation in Arkansas https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Rice_cultivation_in_Arkansas for my article evaluation. I chose this article because my mom and step dad both farm rice and soybeans in Arkansas.
The topic of rice cultivation in Arkansas is the subject of lots of conversations in the town I live in. There were many articles on the subject online that tell why rice is so important in the state.
The article here, https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Rice_cultivation_in_Arkansas, gives very basic information on the subject. Rice farming has changed since the references listed here were published. The UofA Division of Agriculture, along with seed and chemical companies are always trying new methods to help farmers increase their yields.
This article talks about the planting of rice using a conventional tilled method where farmers plant rice in drilled rows. Most farmers do prefer the drill rice and use levees to control water, but some are going to row rice planting to save time and money with watering. https://www.ricefarming.com/departments/feature/row-rice-gains-ground-in-arkansas/ This drill method is the method that my family still uses. The ground is worked, then rice is drilled, next surveying is done, then levees are pulled and finally levee gates are put in. The row rice method different because you can use soybean beds that are already in the field, the rows are watered with pipes not flooded, and there are no levees or gates.
Row rice is gaining popularity slowly. In this article, https://talkbusiness.net/2018/07/growing-rice-in-rows-becoming-more-popular-in-arkansas/, some of the farmers from Arkansas who use this method were interviewed and they state that this method saves time and money. The only thing that farmers do have to be aware of is insect control.
The articles on ricefarming.com and talkbusiness.net, show mostly the same information about row rice and how some farmers are turning to that method.
Arkansas is the largest producer of rice in the United States. According to this article, https://www.arfb.com/pages/arkansas-agriculture/commodity-corner/rice/, Arkansas is first in rice production and accounts for 40% of the production in the US. The wikipedia article states that Arkansas accounts for 45% as of 2001, so our state continues to maintain the lead in rice production. Riceland in Stuttgart employs a lot of the population from that town and surrounding towns and counties. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hunter.Adams99 (talk • contribs) 22:06, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
