Press activities / Oppidan Press

[edit]

Removed the following from the article as I felt that it was 1) added in the wrong place and 2) is more just an "advertising" link for the Oppidan Press then an addition to the article as an whole. Possibly a section on Student newspaper activities in general would be more appropriate. also the author should think of getting a Wikipedia account.

"In 2007, two Rhodes University undergraduate students initiated a student newspaper called The Oppidan Press. The newspaper caters to the student population alienated by the existing student newspaper."

Copyright?

[edit]

Most of the text in this article has been lifted verbatim from Rhodes University. Has permission been granted for this? Tiles 00:41, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure who did this, but it shouldn't be a problem -- the university's website terms and conditions says that any content may be lifted so long as it is not used for commercial purposes:

1.3 Without derogating from the aforegoing, Rhodes University hereby authorises the user to view, copy, download to a local drive, print and distribute the content of this web site, or any part thereof, provided that:

1.3.1 such content is used for information and/or non-commercial purposes only; and

1.3.2 any reproduction of the content of this web site, or portion thereof, must include the following copyright notice: © Rhodes University 2005. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Looking at the logs, it was also uploaded from the university's IPv4 address block. My guess is that the initial upload was done by a member of the university's web unit (and thus there are no copyright issues). I can confirm this in due course.

Got rid of what looked like spam on this discussion page (no signature, just IP and unrelated text). --EKhayaICT 22:30, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Third oldest university?

[edit]

Rhodes is definately not the third oldest university in South Africa. UCT, Maties, Wits (1896) and Unisa (1873) are all older than Rhodes. Both Rhodes and Kovsies (Free State) were founded in 1904. See List of universities in South Africa. That makes Rhodes either 5th, joint 5th or 6th oldest university.Purple Duke (talk) 19:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have amended this. According to List of universities in South Africa it is listed as the fourth oldest university, not the third. DiscipleOfKnowledge 03:45, 3 May 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by DiscipleOfKnowledge (talkcontribs)

The University of the Free State was founded on 28 January 1904, making it the fourth oldest university and Rhodes University on 31 May 1904 making it the fifth oldest. See History of the University of the Free State and History of Rhodes University

name controversy

[edit]

Was there no argument? Such as referencing his statement “ equal rights for all civilised men”? The board voted not to change the name, in any case. More info needed. 2A00:23EE:1080:70FB:95AD:7A4D:5FCA:7208 (talk) 22:06, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni

[edit]

Not sure what the Wikipedia regulations are, but would it not be better to just point to the Rhodes University alumni page: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:Rhodes_University_alumni rather than trying to maintain a separate list on the page for Rhodes University itself?
