I am currently reading a book "The Last Mountain Dancer" by Chuck Kinder. In this novel Kinder reffers to Red Dog driveways. Does anyone know what "Red Dog" could be cheaply spread on a southern appalachin mountain driveway?

Red Dog is a nonvolatile combustion product of the oxidation of coal or coal refuse. The term is most commonly applied to material resulting from in situ, uncontrolled burning of coal or coal refuse piles. It is similar to coal ash. Red Dog is used instead of gravel on driveways in coal mining areas. It is practically free. (see http://www.coaleducation.org/glossary.htm#R ).
