Civil union recognition in South Africa

In the introductory paragraph, it reads: "Civil partnerships or de facto unions are also recognized in South Africa, and the French, Spanish and Portuguese territories."

I was in law school in 2005 in South Africa and dealt with the very fast changing status of same-sex marriage in the country (we even had our family law textbooks delayed because they had to be updated to reflect a very recent ruling).

The ruling in 'Fourie & Bonthuis v Minister of Home Affairs (2004)' effectively legalised same-sex marriage in SA, even though it still needed to be codified. A part of this ruling and the logic behind it was that it would effectively do away with the need for civil unions - If anyone can get married, there is no need to still give special consideration for such unions and the rights associated with it. I can try to dust off some old textbooks and find sources, but I just thought it'd be a good idea to review the current statement that SA still recognises civil partnerships.
