Caps

[edit]

Under regular season section, would it better to use appearances rather than caps to categorize the number of games played. As far as I'm aware, a cap denotes an international game played. Traditionally, international soccer teams (like England) awards its players a cap for every international game played

Team History

[edit]

The History section is choppy and doesn't even start with the creation of the team. There's no mention of Dave Checkett's announcement of the team or anything. The article in general is outdated and needs work. I'll try to give it a few minutes in the near future.WXAggie (talk) 21:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Huh?

[edit]

In the second paragraph, regarding the name of the franchise, it says:

Fan support for the name, however, has not been positive, as rumors that the name would be Real Salt Lake were largely met with derision and pessimism.

However, later in the same paragraph it says:

Although it is yet to be seen how both the American and European media respond to this highly unconventional name, there has been little derision or disapproval so far.

So...which is it? bob rulz 05:01, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

I don't know, but it is a stupid name. The team website implies that they wanted to appeal to the hispanic community in Salt Lake, though they don't explicitly say so. Sandy supposedly unveiled their plans for the stadium yesterday, but other than the fact that they unveiled their plans, I can't find any info about what those plans actually are. Aranhamo 00:30, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Truth is we wish we could change it (the fans in Salt lake) but we're stuck with it. Also, the reason Chivas USA is a big rival? cause all the friggin illegals here support it!!! go to any real/chivas game and you can tell who's on what side. Chivas fans are brown, real fans are white. it's that simple.

  • All I can say is that the name is strange and out-of-the-ordinary, but it's OK to me. Now I'll go somewhere else and spout off pro-Rapids stuff.

Pronunciation?

[edit]

Is the word "Real" in the name pronounced like the Spanish "Real" from which it is derived, or pronounced like the english world "Real" (meaning actual)? Pimlottc 05:39, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is pronounced like the Spanish "Real" CXHazuki 06:18, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is pronounced RAY-AL. Real in Spanish translate to Royal in English —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.161.212.46 (talk) 02:50, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Famous Supporters?

[edit]

Are there any?

I noticed that Chivas, Chicago Fire, DC United, LA Galaxy, Red Bull NY, and even Columbus have famous supporters listed. Does Real Salt Lake have any? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Qwestarsenal (talkcontribs) 03:23, 4 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

XanGo is one. JetBlue Airways is another. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.161.212.46 (talk) 02:52, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Huntsman Jr. as Savior

[edit]

Governor Huntsman jumped in to "save" the team? I don't think this is how it happened at all. There were a number of offers, just none that Checketts was persuaded to like. I think Huntsman lobbied harder than private enterprise, and with Mayor Rocky Anderson, put together a "plan" that would ensure they could maintain control over the stadium - keeping it in Salt Lake County. I think the language here is a little too glowing of Huntsman Jr.'s involvement as team savior and should perhaps be modified. Thoughts? Nhansen 03:18, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Captain

[edit]

What player is the captain of Real Salt Lake?

Currently Eddie Pope, but that will change as he's retiring after this season. Skrymsli 00:44, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Record

[edit]

Maybe some mention of the fact that it makes the news when RSL scores a goal, let alone wins a game, because RSL actually scoring is such an unusual occurrence. I don't see anything on RSL's win/loss record, etc. here.

Tejada Status?

[edit]

Tejada is listed as "in" for the 2007 season, but he has been released according to this. How do you handle it when someone is acquired and released in the same season? In and out?

Jafet Soto is Noteable?

Real Salt Lake or Real Salt Lake City?

Which one? I ask because the city is officially called Salt Lake City, Utah. Cheers from Malpass93 (talk) 00:39, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2009 Season article

[edit]

Your club doesn't yet have a 2009 Season article, we are hoping to get each of the MLS teams up and going like these; Sounders, Fire, Dynamo, Wizards, and TFC. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me at anytime. Thanks Morry32 (talk) 01:11, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Real Gold

[edit]

FTA: The team colors are claret red, cobalt blue, and Real gold.[1]

So did they invent their own color or is 'Real gold' just a pretentious way of saying 'yellow'? The citation link is broken, so who has the answers? --Mooky (talk) 19:24, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's just named as such to coincide with the regal-attitude of the team. 12:48, 01 January, 2011 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.186.227.149 (talk) 19:48, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stadium section

[edit]

A lot of this material, particularly about the finacial politics behind building the stadium, really belongs in the article on Rio Tinto Stadium, as it's about the stadium, not the team. While they are definitely linked, it's just too much detail for this article. It's not like Rio Tinto doesn't have it's own article where this is more appropriate. In short, the section needs to be trimmed and summarized better, per WP:SUMMARY. oknazevad (talk) 06:09, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

History of Real Salt Lake

[edit]

I started an article History of Real Salt Lake for the season=by-season recaps. We should summarize this material and leave the detailed history for the new page. I would suggest one paragraph with info about getting the expansion team, playing at Rice-Eccles, getting better and making the play-offs, winning the Cup, and then the CONCACAF heartache. Change in roster format

[edit]

There was a discussion about the new roster format and we have had a trial at both the Timbers and Whitecaps articles and recently Cascadia Cup rival Sounders have converted. The idea is to move all club articles on Wikipedia to the new format as is discussed in the original discussion and more recently at the football project.

My suggestion is to complete the MLS team articles first, so if you could respond at this discussion, that would be ideal. In short, the new layout is slightly taller and less wide, but it correctly impliments WP:MOSFLAG and is better for visually impared users of Wikipedia and others who use readers. I plan to implement the change to this article by the weekend of January 20-22, however other editors could make the change sooner. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This article is in need of some serious clean-up

[edit]

I've tagged this article as being confusing and requiring cleanup, it abounds with obvious errors that make no sense. For example: On October 16, 2010 Real Salt Lake improved their home unbeaten streak to 25 games in a row after beating the FC Dallas 2–0. This win gave Real Salt Lake the most consecutive home games without a loss in MLS history.[8][9] This streak was ended at 29 games on May 28, 2010, with their loss to the Seattle Sounders FC. According to this, RSL improved their unbeaten streak in Oct. 2010, but then the streak ended prior to that in May 2010??? This is just one example of many inconsistencies in the article, I'm afraid a 12-13 year old fan wrote most of the content in this article and it shows. -War wizard90 (talk) 05:50, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

War wizard90 — I agree this article needs improvement, but a generic tag at the top of the article does very little to help other editors address the problems you see. It is helpful that you pointed out one specific problem, but your comment suggests you have identified many more. I suggest you add tags — such as {{inconsistent}} — to specific sentences that you find problematic. If that is not the right tag for you, the page Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup has just about every tag you might want. CUA 27 (talk) 03:31, 20 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the one typo identified above. And I've made a number of other improvements to the article. Are there other confusing items that need to be cleared up? If so, please identify them so that editors can fix them. If there is nothing else, I'll remove the tag. CUA 27 (talk) 00:38, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

History section: section headings

[edit]

Hello, I noticed there were a few edits, in the history page of Real Salt Lake that were unnecessary. I myself put time to place the team's history contents in the history section which barely had anything before. No one else was interested in doing so at that time. To me Jason Kreis was the one that had made the Team relevant and a playoff contender/Dark horse they have been over the years. Their motto "the team is the star" was from him as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluhaze777 (talkcontribs) 14:31, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My view on section headings is that they should reflect the most significant events during the team's history. There appear to be two issues with our various conflicting edits. First, I attemtpted to add a heading that mentioned the new stadium opening in 2008. As the article discusses, there is a fair chance that the team would have left Salt Lake without the new stadium; the team has significantly increased its number of season-ticket holders and improved its revenue since the stadium was built. Is there a particular reason you don't think the new stadium should be mentioned in a section heading?
Second, you characterize the 2007–2013 period as the "Jason Kreis era," because in your view you attribute the team's success during that period to him. One could just as easily call it the "Garth Lagerway era," as he was the architect of the roster and is widely viewed as one of the best general managers in MLS. So what's the solution here? One possibility is we could call it the "Lagerway and Kreis era." A little clunky, I know, but perhaps more accurate, as both individuals have been credited with the team's success over the past few years. CUA 27 (talk) 15:30, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with CUA 27. I also think that the prose should be substantially edited for length. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:41, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First and most, the minor headings for the 2009 MLS cup and the CCL run is fine. Rio Tinto stadium was necessary for RSL to established foundation in Sandy, Utah. However there already is content of the process of getting a stadium in the team's history. I'm ok with Lagerway and Lewis era along with having enough content about Lagerway for the article to be able to show his contributions as well. I think their achievements weighs more than their stadium. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluhaze777 (talkcontribs) 16:32, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think captioning something as "The So-and-So Era" makes sense - and really is defensible only - when that person is so associated with a change in the way things were run, or was so intimately linked in the public mind with the team's fate (for good or bad) during that period - that the person and the team for that time can't be separated. Also, an "era" is a long time, not just a couple- three years. So: Woody Hayes at Ohio State. Vince Lombardi at Green Bay. Darrell Royal at Texas. I don't think Jason Kreis at RSL is quite there. JohnInDC (talk) 16:58, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well Jason Kreis was the team's third head coach with a Tenure of 2007 - 2013. That is not a couple or 3 years. I don't know if Garth Leagerway was the first General Manager but Jason Kreis was there for 6 years and did a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluhaze777 (talkcontribs) 17:22, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with JohnInDC. The term "era" is overused. Is it the Kries era? The Lagerway era? Or should it be the Beckerman/Rimando/Morales era? All of them were there for many years and contributed much to the team's success. If you look at this old version of the Toronto FC article, you can see what a mess results from overusing the "era" designation. CUA 27 (talk) 17:41, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think, if you can even begin a discussion about which of 2-3 people, or events, best defines an "era", then you haven't got an "era" at all, and need to come up with a better section heading. JohnInDC (talk) 18:05, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jason Kreis did contribute a lot to the team. That's why I originally believed that The Heading Jason Kreis Era was good when I did that last year. Bluhaze777 (talk) 23:31, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

CONCACAF Champions League

[edit]

I didn't like the existing section — it focuses on the opponent and includes too many details that most readers don't care about. I created a summary table that focuses on RSL's performance and how far in the tournament they reached. I don't think we need two tables in this section, so I propose we retain the table that summarizes RSL's performance and remove the table with detailed results by opponent. Thoughts? adding player age to the player roster discusion

[edit]

player roster

[edit]

I've previously added each players age to the player roster, i find the information valuable to understand the player dynamics on the team. however it has been Reverted and i thought i would open in for discusion

Walter Görlitz said after reverting the eddit "Unusual roster format. This is not used in othr MLS or any European league articles that I know of. Please discuss." and i agree that a discussion would be useful. even if it is not done on other pages does not mean that it is inccorect (unless someone with more knowledge knows of a wikipedia guideline that says this is incoreect)

i guess the real question is if the information is useful or not? and is this a proper place to include this information?

i believe it is but this is a group page and i would like to hear people weigh in

This is normal in tournament and national team rosters. The real problem is that this would have to apply to all MLS and possibly NASL articles as well. Walter Görlitz (talk) 05:43, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
your concerns makes sense, it would be a lot of work to switch all of the rosters int MLS and in NASL. However, as you stated, it is normal in tournament and national team rosters so it isn't without presidence and it is viewed as useful information in those settings.

Utah Royals & Rio Tinto

[edit]

Currently it says that RSL shares Rio Tinto Stadium with Utah Royals FC, but the Royals were dissolved 14 months ago. Should we just remove the blurb about them sharing the stadium or mention that they used to share the stadium? 66.205.223.98 (talk) 19:12, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
