Why does The importance of rhyme in rap redirect here?

I've been trying to revert this vandalism but for some reason it won't go away. When I press edit it has all the text from the previous version, but the vandalized version still shows up... Does anyone know what this could be? Julianne

im was interested trying to learn more about this oft-neglected genre, because i feel it is just coming out of its adolecent stage or "be-bop" stage as i like to call it. But instead find my self insulted by some ignorant kind who would rather INSULT whites than educate them- Psymple

Let's keep this as a disambiguation page

...since it seems (as evidenced by editors and visitors to the Wikipedia) that people are confusing the rapping article as the article for hip hop music. --FuriousFreddy 14:45, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

"Rhythmic American Poetry"

...is a backronym, meaning "someone made it up after the fact". It is not an actualy definition of why "rap music" is called "rap music". Do not add this back into the article. --FuriousFreddy 23:31, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

No article on the prduct of rapping

Presently Wikipedia has the articles Singing, Song, and Rapping, but no article for the product of rapping, that is a rap. If there is an article with some other name, there should be a link to it here. -Acjelen 02:51, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Redirection proposal

Since almost all of the incoming links for this dab refer to rap music (ie: Hip hop music) I propose that this dab be redirected to Hip hop music.

  • What about the practice of rapping by itself? --FuriousFreddy 17:03, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Rap is a component of hip hop music, but not the whole of it - this should redirect to rapping, which says in the first line that it is a component of hip hop music. Fair solution? BD2412 T 01:28, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
    • "Rap" is not a component of hip-hop music. "Rapping", that is, "the art of MCing or rhyming over a track", is. --FuriousFreddy 00:46, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
    • I agree that the page should redirect. I think that rapping is a better place to go than hip hop music, since the distinction between the two should be maintained. It would mean fixing a lot more links to sort out where rap refers to the music itself, and where it refers to the particular element. On the other hand, what about an article on the product of rapping, aka a rap per Acjelen's suggestion. Smmurphy 23:46, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
      • "Rap" should not redirect to rapping, because a lot of these links are referring to "rap music", not "rapping" or "rappers". That's the main reason I made this a disambiguation in the first place. And why do we need an article on a "rap", when we already have one on a song? I mean, what is it going to say? "A rap is a song that contains rapped vocals"...and then what. I'd like to see someone write a fully factually article on a "rap" that wouldn't be better served as a paragrah somewhere at song, because there is no difference between "a rap" and "a song". "A rap" is either a type of song, or an element (that is, a verse) of one.
      • Basically:
        1. To clarify, "rap music" and "hip-hop music" are the same thing. All music that is hip-hop music must either contain primarily rapped vocals or no vocals at all. If a song has a hip-hop style sound to it, but the main artist is a singer (example: Usher, Destiny's Child), then that is not a "hip hop song". That is an R&B song. R&B is not a subcategory of hip-hop music.
        2. In all honesty, this page should not be redirected. "Rap" can refer to the genre of hip hop/rap music, to the act of being a rapper, or to a song which contains rapped vocals. We have two seperate articles on those subjects, which is what disambiguation pages were created for.
        3. If it is insisted upon that "rap" be redirected somewhere, it should go to "hip-hop music", with the disclaimer at the top of the page "'Rap' redirects here. For other uses of the term, see Rap (disambiguation)", which is where what is here should go. --FuriousFreddy 00:46, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
        • The difference between these is very small. I can't imagine someone clicking on the word "rap" in the context of being a rapper and being disappointed to find themselves at, say, rapping. Redirection seems very sensible here. Soo 11:44, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
          • Rapping IS the article to look for for someone "clicking on the word 'rap' in the context of being a rapper". But, if someone clicks on the word "rap" in the context of rap music, then rapping is not the right page to redirect them to. Why do I have to explain myself over and over again every time this issue arises? Rap music and the practice of being a rapper are two seperate things. "Rap" as a verb is covered at rapping, and "rap" as a noun covering a genre of music is covered at hip hop music. I made this disambiguation page for that reason. Coming from someone who is at least more thoroughly familiar with rap/hip-hop/et al than the average Wikipedian, I'd hope it is understood why this is set up this way. Redirection is not the way to go here; we'll get even more Confused Carls thinking thatthe article at rapping is the "rap music" article (and then proceeding to post in POV "criticisms" detailing why "rap" supposedly isn't music). --FuriousFreddy 03:39, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Coin info

I removed the following entry thinking it was copyvio, but it turned out that the source was over 100 years old so it's probably ok. Anyhow, where does it fit in Wikipedia? Probably not enough for its own article, is there an existing article it can slip into?

* The rap was a base half-penny, intrinsically worth about half a farthing, issued for the nonce in Ireland in 1721, because small coin was so very scarce at the time. It remains in the English expression "Not worth a rap". There was also a coin in Switzerland called a rappe, worth the seventh of a penny.

Pointers from: FuriousFreddy

  • "''Straight Outta Compton'' is a [[1988]] <nowiki>[[rap]] album by NWA" should become "Straight Outta Compton is a 1988 rap album by NWA", NOT "Straight Outta Compton is a 1988 rap album by NWA".</nowiki> (because "rap" is used as a noun defining "a genre of American popular music")
  • "Little Calvin Broadas decided he wanted to <nowiki>[[rap]] for a living" should become "Little Calvin Broadas decided he wanted to rap for a living", NOT "Little Calvin Broadas decided he wanted to rap for a living".</nowiki> (because "rap" is used as a verb describing "a technique of delvering rhythmic lyrics over an instrumental track")
  • "Like many TLC songs, "Waterfalls" includes a <nowiki>[[rap]] from Left-Eye." should become "Like many TLC songs, "Waterfalls" includes a rap from Left-Eye.", NOT "Like many TLC songs, "Waterfalls" includes a rap from Left-Eye." </nowiki> (because "rap" is used as a noun describing "a verse of rhythmic lyrics delivered over an instrumental track by a rapper")
  • "The station was criticized for playing too much <nowiki>[[rap]]" should become "The station was criticized for playing too much rap", NOT "The station was criticized for playing too much rap".</nowiki> (because "rap" is used as a noun defining "a genre of American popular music")
