Removed the section Notable Rajpurohits

[edit]

I have removed the section. Not only did it contain someone's opinion ("it is truly unfortunate"...), but most people on the list are likely not notable in the Wiki-sense. If such a list is really necessary, in my opinion it should be prepared here on this talk page, and it should contain only people who already have a wiki-page or who are likely to have one at some point because their notability is not questionable. -- O.Koslowski (talk) 09:09, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaned up

[edit]

I have just removed 90+% of the article, because it was entirely ensourced. WP:V, one of the cornerstones of Wikipedia policy, requires that all information in Wikipedia be verifiable in reliable sources. It is always better to have less information that is verified than to have big swathes of unverified info. In addition, quite a fair amount of what I removed shouldn't be in the article even if verified; for example, we don't want a laundry list of every village that every sub-caste has people in--that simply goes beyond what a general encyclopedia should offer.

Others are welcome to expand the article, so long as you do so with reliable sources. I tried searching, but couldn't find anything particularly noteworthy. I found a source mentioning the Rajpurohits as one of a number of other groups who had enrolled in government work assistance at a minimal level, and another source mentioning some environmental differences they have with the Bishnoi, but not enough in either place that I could really justify inclusion. One difficulty with searching for info is the fact that Rajpurohit is also a common surname, and thus there are many false positives in searches. But if anyone knows of good sources, please do add them; if you need help formatting the sources, please post them here and I'll assist. Qwyrxian (talk) 00:01, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've just trawled through the near-100 hits at JSTOR for Rajpurohit. Without exception, they all relate to academics bearing that name, and they are mostly articles about wolves, bears, primates and mangroves. Tellingly, there is nothing about this community in Economic and Political Weekly, nor does JSTOR return any hits for the plural of the community name.

I've added an entry in Further Reading for the Anthropological Survey of India study but please can we remember that this is from the "states" series - rather than the "national" series that was published by Cambridge University Press. The states series has frequently been considered to be of dubious reliability - there is some background here - and I'm a bit loathe to see it used as a source. - Sitush (talk) 16:54, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is also nothing using my view of GBooks, aside from the aforementioned dubious People of India volume. Is this group really notable? - Sitush (talk) 18:31, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ambiguity of the word "community"

[edit]

It is the word "community" that is ambiguous in the lead to Rajpurohit. Community for many people means "place" as in settlement. It does not have a meaning of "cultural group" for some people. Thus a "community of people" for them still means a place. We need to be clear. --Bejnar (talk) 19:06, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We've not long since gone through a tedious semantics debate on another article, where a recent previous such debate had resulted in an indef block for someone else. As there, this statement is perfectly obvious in context. I find "cultural community" to be vague: like most people, I belong to several of what I think you mean by "cultural communities" (deaf people, British people, Mancunians, Wikipedians etc) and I doubt that many of them would recognise the term but when you see "community of people living in ..." it is blindingly obvious. But feel free to call them a caste if you want and the sources support it (and by "sources", I do not mean government lists because their classification system is very weird). - Sitush (talk) 19:21, 16 May 2013 (UTC).[reply]
Speaking as someone with a background in English, ESL, and linguistics, there is no ambiguity there because of the sentence afterwards. Since the second sentence contains the leading verb "They", we can know that the word "Rajpurohit" must be referring to a thing which can be both singular (as it is in the first sentence) and plural (as in the second); there aren't many things in that class, and the only one that applies to the word "community" is "a group of people with some form of shared identity, internally given or externally imposed". Now, if it would help matters, we could change the first sentence to read "The Rajpurohit are a community of people". Would that be more clear for you Bejnar? Addition of unsourced material

[edit]

Rajpurohit-Veer and Arunsingh2, I have removed the information again as it is unsourced and extremely POV. If you want to add the material, it needs to be accompanied by reliable sources. This info was culled back in 2012 with this edit by Qwyrxian. If the info cannot be sourced, then it cannot be in the article. Period. Ishdarian 07:31, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rajpurohit Caste is a Brahma-Kshatriya Caste which means that they have the qualities of Kshatriyas as well as of Brahmins. They fought various battles from time to time to save there state and to represent there importance in past as you visit Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur you will see various "Chatris" of Rajpurohit warrious like Guman Singh ji etc. Rajpurohits were not the priest they were the gurus. They do not perform puja paths, they use to perform the rituals like Rajya-bhishek etc. Bhaba Shailesh Rajpurohit (talk) 08:04, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

[edit]

Too much of Edit warring and POV push is going on in this article by an IP user who is consistently reinstating this version. There are many problems with this version. Most of the content here is not even mentioned in cited references and is POV push while some references used are simply dubious and unauthentic. This version also contains images of notable individuals of the community which is not a good idea for caste articles. Some experienced editor or Administrator must intervene as soon as possible. Vedant Katyayan (talk) 13:43, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fylindfotberserk Please look into this. Vedant Katyayan (talk) 13:46, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hirohitko, @2409:4089:bd91:ce2b::2d0b:c513, @2409:40d4:2006:9f21:4974:dc65:be4d:b05a. I put notices on all of your talk pages, so you are now all aware of the edit warring policy. You need to stop reverting the article now that you have been made aware. Please don't bother explaining how you should be allowed to revert the article because you're correct about how the article should be and the person you're reverting is a vandal; even if you are correct, that does not matter according to Wikipedia's edit warring policy. People have been blocked for edit warring many times before even when they turned out to be correct about content.
What needs to happen now is a calm, civil discussion in which no one makes accusations against anyone else, where a mutually-acceptable path forward can be figured out. AntiDionysius (talk) 16:13, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AntiDionysius I am really sorry and i have only used undo 2nd time on that page and will not do it again. Hirohitko (talk) 16:18, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.
You may wish now to explain here what you think the article should say, and why AntiDionysius (talk) 16:21, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AntiDionysius I cannot imagine any better than the version i reverted to because when i checked references on that page i found nothing what is mentioned on that page. First paragraph of that page in which it says 'rajpurohits are martial race and have originated from saptarishis' is not found in any reference on that page. This page is full of exaggerated data and 70% of that article is lie either made up or from poor source and you will see people who are defending it are biased if you check their editing history. That's why people are losing faith in wikipedia when history is concerned. Hirohitko (talk) 16:40, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vedant Katyayan: I'd say restored Sitush's version [2] or mine [3] (which is Sitush's version plus extra maintenance) and build it from there, one at a time. I see a lot of non-RS. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 10:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk Sure, I am restoring your version and will try to fix minor inperfections i found in that version. Vedant Katyayan (talk) 13:26, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vedant Katyayan Please remove that line which says rajpurohit are similar to charans and rajputs when they are different. This is lie and rajpurohit are priest not similar to us. And the line which say that they were administrators and royal counsil members is also a lie and not written in any source of that page. Source only says priest, trader and agriculture you can check by yourself. someone just added lots and lots of lies. Hirohitko (talk) 13:49, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hirohitko Ahh, it's too time taking to be honest to check each and every source for every sentence on that article. Give me some time. Regarding similarity between Rajpurohit, Rajputs and Charans in customs and political ideologies, It is indeed mentioned in the source cited after it so it should not be removed. Dear Sir/ Ma'am A settlement was reached on this page on the basis of last accepted version and a protection was applied. The accused @vedant katyayan has upgraded himself to more than 500 edits and again gone for his disgusting move of deleting history and legacy of Rajpurohits. Its my humble request to kindly restore the previous correct version and also block this maniac. Anshu1799 (talk) 18:08, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel case @AntiDionysius @Idoghor Melody Anshu1799 (talk) 18:11, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Despite of all the correct references, this maniac is sought after deleting and defaming the Rajpurohits. Kindly grant me the Editing rights as I am a learned researcher and this @vedant katyayana needs to be blocked completely. He has got vested malicious intentions filled with jealousy against Rajpurohits. This is a very sensitive issue for us as Rajpurohits. Kindly take action asap. Anshu1799 (talk) 18:14, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: You are welcome to participate a discussion, probably in the above section of the talk page, to find a consensus on how the page should look going forward. To do so you will probably need to provide reliable sources.
Under no circumstances are you welcome to make personal attacks towards other editors. The edits you are describing are not vandalism, there is no basis to accuse anyone of being "malicious" or "jealous", and even if that were not the case, your name-calling would not be appropriate. See WP:CIVILITY, WP:AGF, WP:NPA. Thank you --AntiDionysius (talk) 18:16, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have already mentioned earlier that the version which is correct has all the references which are well established. some of the books mentioned there are even present in Oxford library. Some of the references are books written by very notable historians. How can someone completely negate that ? and How can someone like that be protected by editors' community ? My way could be informal but my intentions are absolutely pious and legitimate. I expect some remedy out of this unacceptable behaviour as this is a sensitive issue. No member of the caste in discussion would accept this version. Anshu1799 (talk) 18:40, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The remedy is that you talk about it. AntiDionysius (talk) 18:45, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There's no other mechanism by which you can get closer to your preferred version of the article. Even if you were right and there was cause for blocking Vedant Katyayan, that still wouldn't mean your preferred version of the page would be restored. That kind of decision only gets made by discussion and consensus. AntiDionysius (talk) 18:51, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This person @vedanta katyayan even mentions in his recent edit caption that Rajpurohit is a caste of modern origin. What a Blasphemy ! Any Indian with even little knowledge of history would know that we have accounts of existence of Rajpurohit since Mahabharata (Guru Dronacharya, Kripacharya, Ashwathama, etc were Rajpurohits). For all those who have no idea about who is correct can simply google up the fundamental book of Rajpurohit history - "RAJPUROHIT JATI KA ITIHAAS BY DR PRAHLAD SINGH RAJPUROHIT". One who has read or even have an idea about it would agree that no discussion is required and the last version that I edited yesterday with caption- FINAL MOAT(MOST) AUTHENTIC VERSION is actually the most legitimate form. Whosoever is empowered to make further changes with this regard is requested to take the action asap. Anshu1799 (talk) 19:24, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've explained to you that discussion is the only way forward. There's really not much else I can do for you. As I said, you are welcome to make a report to the admins if you would like, but they're going to tell you the same thing I told you. AntiDionysius (talk) 19:42, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a stark difference between a Purohit and Rajpurohit. Rajpurohit is a Brahmin community, who as a rule, did not provide any Brahminical services as expected with the caste duties of Brahmins, which the purohits/ pandits did. Rajpurohits took part in battlefield, business, promoting culture through arts, educational services etc. Therefore, Rajpurohits are Brahmins by Birth but Kshatriyas by Deeds.

Mythological mention and legend
There is evidence in the Puranas that every state had a Rajpurohit, Rajguru or Kulguru, who were mostly famous Saptarishis or their descendants. Vashishtha was the Rajguru of the Ikshvaku clan in the Kosala kingdom. In the mythologies, the character of Rajpurohit is said to be one of the major characters who used to express his opinion on every matter of the state and played an important role in the battlefield. In the Vedic period, the position of the Rajpurohit was also traditional in many groups of the Aryan clan. Being the guru (teacher) of the state, he was called Rajguru. They attained the feudal status during the Rathore rule in the medieval period. They were as much into mentoring the royal house, educating princes, guiding the king, providing advice on the matters of welfare of the state, and performing religious duties as they were into helping maintain the security of the kingdom by being actively involved in battles. Rajpurohits were incorporated into the feudal structure of Rajasthan, as they received grants of villages, called jagirs, from the rulers from time to time. Consequently, they came closer to Rajputs in terms of tradition and way of life. Though they retained the Brahminical customs of vegetarianism, wearing of Janeu, and others. Recognised by the royal court, they could provide competent services in every field of the state, be it administrative, political, or strategic. However, this caste is formed of purohits from certain areas of Rajasthan such as Marwar and Mewar. Based on their services and merit, they were granted many jagirs, Thikana, and feudal lands. These villages or land were considered to be free from any ruler and were outside the ambit of any form of tax. That’s why there is a difference in traditions between the Rajpurohit and other Brahmin castes. There are many clans in the Rajpurohit caste but the most prominent among them are Sevad, Sodha, Rajguru, Manana, Udesh and Jagarwal. Much information about these clans comes from the ledgers of the jagirs and thikanas granted to them and some information from the historical sources of Raj Marwar.

By the medieval period, many societies under Rathore rule laid more emphasis on strategic power and political empowerment so that they could prove their worth and serve in the royal court. During the time of Rao Maldev, Rajpurohits got the opportunity to get important positions in the feudal system. Rao Maldev who was once saved from a lion by Rajpurohit Pratap Singh by piercing dagger into the heart of lion, compelled him to give the title of "Singh" to Rajpurohits.

Akheraj Singh Rajpurohit, in late 17th century, was one of the most important confidants of Maharaj Jaswant Singh who later also served and protected Prince Ajit Singh. Ajit Singh gave Akheraj ji titles like “Patshah” and “Anvi” declaring him the King of Rajpurohits.

Keshri Singh Akherajot was the son of Akheraj Singh Rajpurohit and is regarded as one of the greatest warriors of all time in the history of Marwar. He was the Rajguru of Abhay Singh and Bakht Singh. In 1730, Battle of Ahmedabad against Sarbuland Khan, he performed Saka and won the war for Marwar. He is one of the few warriors in the history of Rajputana whose torso fought and slew enemies even after being beheaded. This is why he is referred as "Bhomiya" and "Junjhaar" and worshipped as folk deity.

ok then @AntiDionysius Till the matter is resolved through consensus, restore the edit which was there before all this started. At least there should be a level playing field. You can't deny my request, accept his version and then talk for consensus. I demand that situation shall be restored to what it was a week before this guy started manipulating things. Then on the table we can share our "reliable sources". although he is just there to create ruckus and I challenge if he has some RELIABLE SOURCES to counter my version. Anshu1799 (talk) 12:04, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will mention the sources. Sir I might not be very good with formatting in wikipedia but certainly my knowledge is authentic. these are the most authentic sources in the world for the cast Rajpurohits, which I myselk have studied all the books for my research papers:
1. This is the Bible (revised version) for Rajpurohit caste history -- https://rgbooks.net/shop/raj-history-culture/rajpurohit-jati-itihas-1-2/
2. THIS BOOK IS IN OXFORD LIBRARY, ENGLAND
https://rgbooks.net/shop/biography-festival/veer-kesarisingh-rajpurohit-ka-jasprakash/
3. THIS IS THE EARLY 18TH CENT ACCOUNT BY CHARAN POET KARNIDAAN JI WHO USED TO WRITE LIVE ACCOUNTS OF BATTLEFIELDS; IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET IN ORIGINAL FORM BUT I HOPE THIS IS SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO ASSURE AUTHENTICITY
https://archive.org/details/suraj-prakash-of-kaviya-karnidanji-series-no.-67-rajasthan-puratan-granthmala
4. There are some other authors like Zahoor khan, Nagar, NS Bhati, etc but I personally have not read them entirely so didn't mention.
ALSO DR PRAHLAD SINGH RAJPUROHIT has been honoured by the state and is the most authentic personality in this topic (Rajpurohits). I hope all of this info is sufficient enough to fall under "reliable sources". If still people find a reason to misguide, misrepresent and portray manipulated stuff as per one's own vested propaganda. Then I must appeal it to higher authorities or headquarters maybe. But I have high hopes from senior editors @AntiDionysius @Fylindfotberserk @Daniel case Anshu1799 (talk) 13:11, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
