My comment from the AFD, with refs someone might use to improve this stub article: Well known Alger story, even if not great literature. Received a favorable review in Putnam's Magazine, Second Volume, July-December 1868, page 120 [1]. " A Hunt on Snow Shoes" (1906) by Edward Ellis[2] says this was the book that made Alger famous (p366), and that 200,000 copies had sold by 1906. "Growing Up Postmodern," edited by Ronald Strickland, (2002), page 53 [3] has substantial discussion of the book. Also analyzed in "Intimateadfc and authentic economies," by Tom Nissley, (2002) [4] pp 78-80. See also at FindArticles McGlinn, Jeanne "Rags to Riches: The Horatio Alger Theme in Adolescent Novels about the Immigrant Experience". ALAN Review. Summer 2004. FindArticles.com. 08 Sep. 2007. [5]. Britannica gives this novel prominemce in their online article about Alger; see [6]. These cites, only a small fraction of what can be found at Google Books [7], amply satisfy WP:N. Remarkable longevity of notability, besides selling a lot of books over many years. Edison 04:33, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
"Ragged Dick"
[edit]I have heard that the tile was a double-entendre reference to a worn-out (ragged) penis ("dick" is slang for penis). Can anyone provide any references to this potentially important piece of information?
later; in print
[edit]There is a 2019 copyrighted edition listed at Ragged Dick - Google Books. (I don't know how a company can copyright this book so long after its original publication.) Was there a gap in publishing or has the book been in print all along?
The article has little discussion about critical and cultural response. Shouldn't there be more (or else send readers to HA's page for a discussion of po'boy makes good)? 2600:6C67:1C00:5F7E:B1C5:7B21:908D:4BC8 (talk) 14:48, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
