Comments

  • Lead is too brief for this size of article.  Done: Expanded
  • No need to link Canadians in the lead.  Done
  • In other such sports bios, I'd expect her to be described as "a Canadian international hurler".  Done: "Canadian international curler"
  • No idea what TSN is.  Done: clarified
  • Is there a glossary of terms for curling or some appropriate link for "skip"?  Not done: "Skip" is already wikilinked, does it need to be defined as well?  Done (it was linked)
  • "at the Rideau Curling Club" where is this?  Done
  • What does "bantam-aged" mean?  Done
  • "bantam-aged, she won four straight provincial bantam championships" repetitive use of bantam.  Done
  • "while no other curler had won even twice." where is this referenced?  Done
  • "Her bantam rink qualified" what does this mean?  Done: Does "Her team qualified" make more sense?
  • Second para, first three sentences start with "In..."  Done
  • Link round robin.  Done
  • "Rachel Homan, with" no need to repeat first names if there's no ambiguity about whom you're referring to.  Done
  • Don't link major geographical entities like Switzerland.  Done
  • Or Sweden.  Done
  • " in 3rd place " third.  Done
  • "3 vs. 4 game" what's this?  Done: link to page playoff system
  • "finishing in 4th place" I don't think this needs to be said, but if you do, make it fourth.  Done
  • Compare "Early women's" section, four very short paras with "Scotties champions and world bronze medalist" one large para with "Scotties repeat champions and world silver medalists (2013–14)" five very short paras...  Done: split "Scotties champions and world bronze medalist" into 3 paras
  • "played third for " what does that mean?  Done: link to third (curling)
  • "2012 Ontario" why is the year in italics?  Done: removed italics (was supposed to clarify because the event was in 2011 but called "2012", but unnecessary)
  • "also consisted of " also included.  Done
  • "teammate Alison Kreviazuk," so Brian wasn't a teammate?  Done: clarified
  • "Also in April 2011, " That same month... (to avoid the "in April 2011" repetition.)  Done
  • Link Sudbury. It's certainly not the the original.  Done
  • "with the hammer, missed a draw to the button " more unexplained jargon.  Done: added wikilinks
  • "rock" I thought they were "stones"?  Done: Interchangeable, wikilink to hammer (earlier in the sentence) to explain
  • "she gave up three and lost" again, unless you know curling terminology/rules, this is almost meaningless.  Done: Does "gave up three points" make more sense?
  • "in Kingston, Ontario by winning" comma after Ontario.  Done
  • "2nd behind " second.  Done
  • "won 9–6.[38] With the win" won/win repeat.  Done: Changed to "victory"
  • "jamming a double takeout" not a clue.  Done: added wikilinks
  • "Muirhead in the final.[42][43] Muirhead's rink " Muirhead repeat.  Done: changed to "they"
  • "Trials.[45] At the Trials, " same.  Done: changed to "there"
  • "a 90% shooting percentage" what does this mean?  Done: Does "90% shooting percentage based on overall shot successes throughout the event" make more sense?
  • Val or Valerie Sweeting? And don't overlink.  Done
  • "World #1" no using hash to mean number.  Done: "World number one"
  • "Brett Gallant.[87][88][89][90][86] " ref order.  Done
  • "burned a rock as it was coming to a rest, when a sweeper touched the rock with their broom" a lot of jargon.  Done: Added wikilinks to burned and sweeper
  • Could add a couple of images as there's quite a wall of text in this article.  Not done: The only free-use images I can find are very similar to the one in the infobox and from the same event. Should they still be added? They wouldn’t add much aside from breaking up the text, though.
  • Mark is overlinked.  Done
  • "Team events" table, why not using a conventional wikitable?  Done: switched to wikitable
  • In the table, what does bold mean? Note MOS:BOLD too.  Not done: Bolding in the stats table indicates the major events that have totals at the bottom of the table. While I understand italics should be used in prose for emphasis, does this also apply to the stats table? It would look pretty strange.  Done: removed bolding
  • Teams table, why is Homan in bold?  Done: Removed bolding. Usually used in other curlers' team tables to emphasize their position in the lineup each year, but Homan has always been a skip so it's pretty obvious.
  • Could use row and col scopes per MOS:ACCESS (as could the previous tables).  Done
  • This table isn't sortable so why so much overlinking?  Done
  • I assume all of the Grand Slam record is referenced in the main part of the article?  Done: Yep!
  • "*Homan's rink " odd asterisk there.  Done: Switched to note for clarification
  • Use en-dashes in scorelines in ref titles.  Done
  • spaced hyphens in ref titles should also be en-dashes.  Done

That's it for a rapid first pass. A lot of curling terminology needs explanation or linking or rewording to be accessible to all and a few other issues, so it's on hold. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:38, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@The Rambling Man: I think we've now addressed these points, except for the images. The only other free-use images I can find are from the same event, so they wouldn't add much, but if you think they're needed to break up the text, I can add them. Let me know if there's anything else that should be done :) Allthegoldmedals (talk) 18:40, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do my best to get back to you tomorrow. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:42, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I still think the lead is a little brief for the article and some images, even of other curlers noted in the prose, would help, but neither are fundamental failures of the GA criteria so I'll pass this one. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 09:33, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@The Rambling Man: Thank you! Really appreciate the review; we can definitely take a lot of your feedback to improve lots of other curling articles as well. All the best! Allthegoldmedals (talk) 12:10, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Olympics

[edit]

Hi Rachel. Thank you for representing Canada. We are all very proud of you. The most important part of all this is just being there so hold your head up high and smile and again, THANKS! Richard Elson of Lindsay Ontario 76.70.119.15 (talk) 00:00, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Grand slams

[edit]

its wild to me that wiki won't acknowledge Rachel as having the most Grand slam wins when the actual grand slam of curling does. It's no different than Jack's majors vs tigers majors. At one time golf recognized the US amateur as a major, now it doesn't.

https://thegrandslamofcurling.com/homan-captures-co-op-canadian-open-to-claim-16th-grand-slam-title/

"Record-extending" from the actual source.

Those previous defunct events are no longer recognized for various reasons yet wiki refuses to adopt the same logic. In no other sport would this apply.

I.e. golf majors. 74.12.189.170 (talk) 11:40, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is probably something we should discuss WP:CURLING, as you do raise a good point. We started keeping track of Slam wins when the defunct slams were considered proper slams. So, we've just kind of continued to do so here, which makes things kind of awkward now. Personally, I do find it annoying the GSOC won't recognize the earlier slams as it takes away from the accomplishments of curlers like Jennifer Jones who would have the most Slam wins, and Wang Bingyu who was the first non-Canadian to win a Slam, but now has that accomplishment retroactively taken away from her.-- Earl Andrew - talk 14:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I feel we should be bound by what the governing body of the events cpunt. There are countless examples of teams recognizing championships that leagues don't, merged, moved team etc. but the example of men's golf majors appears to apply here. The criteria was changed and now all recognize the new criteria with subtext to the defunct slams which the GSOC has chosen not to recignize. (Just like Tiger Woods US amateurs). 2605:8D80:66C:33E6:5423:4B94:5EF4:25EE (talk) 17:32, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your reasoning, and going against it is close to violating WP:OR. So, if you feel strongly about the change, please bring it up at WP:CURLING so we can discuss as a community, as this would affect several articles in the project.-- Earl Andrew - talk 19:47, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
started a conversation under talk on that page. Thanks 74.12.189.170 (talk) 02:17, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
