Please stop me if I’m getting this wrong!

Existing text reads:

In Drosophila, the roundabout gene, a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily, encodes an integral membrane protein that is both an axon guidance receptor and a cell adhesion receptor. This receptor is involved in the decision by axons to cross the central nervous system midline. The protein encoded by this gene is structurally similar to the Drosophila roundabout protein.

It’s unchanged since the article was first created (except for links added). Pronoun reference seems unsuccessful here - what we’ve got is actually this:

In Drosophila, the roundabout gene .. encodes [a] .. protein ...  The protein encoded by this gene is structurally similar to the Drosophila roundabout protein.

“Structurally similar” seems rather an understatement (since the protein encoded by “this” gene is the protein which the Drosophila roundabout gene encodes): it’s probably not the intended meaning.

I think the text is trying to say the human protein encoded by ROBO1 (the subject of the article) is structurally similar to its Drosophila counterpart. I propose to recast the section so tht it reads (in full):

Bilateral symmetric nervous systems have special midline structures that establish a partition between the two mirror image halves. Some axons project toward and across the midline in response to long-range chemoattractants emanating from the midline.  The protein encoded by ROBO1 is structurally similar to a Drosophila integral membrane protein which is encoded by the Drosophila roundabout gene (a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily) and is both an axon guidance receptor and a cell adhesion receptor, known to be involved in the decision by axons to cross the central nervous system midline.  Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for ROBO1.

As I say, anyone please stop me if I’m getting this wrong!
