Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Queens Zoo. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

  • Overall great article, ALT2 is my favorite hook, then ALT1, ALT0, ALT3, ALT4. All check out regarding sourcing and are . The image doesn't really work at the low resolution IMO, I think one of the aviary shots would be better. Some assorted comments since I read the whole article, but are minor and don't block the DYK approval:
    • The Animals section starts with "The zoo is home to as many as 112 species as of 2013" (and in the infobox); is there really no updated figure 10 years later?
    • "The administration of mayor Ed Koch and the New York Zoological Society signed a fifty-year agreement" - did the administration really sign the agreement and not the mayor himself? The NYT source says the mayor signed it.
    • Many animals are not wikilinked on first reference in the Description section, but later are during the Animals section - was there a reason for that?
    • I'm low-key skeptical that the non-free logo in the infobox adds anything, it basically just says the zoo's name. Legoktm (talk) 06:55, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thanks for the review. I added some links and changed the text about the agreement to reflect the source. The logo is outdated, so I removed it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a more recent figure for the number of species (at least, not one that mentions a date). Epicgenius (talk) 14:35, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please provide blackouts wiki-linked to power outage: blackouts.
  • The weeds managed to grow even though security was hired to patrol the grounds :) I'm not sure both of those phrases connect back to the lack of funding, but you tell me.
Article: The renovation ultimately was finished in 1991, but the zoo remained closed because of a lack of funding from the city government.[114][115] Weeds started to grow in the zoo due to a lack of maintenance,[116] though the Zoological Society had hired security guards to patrol the site.[117]
  • Gates of Life are a set of ornamental, bronze grillwork gates. They were crafted by a sculptor, but perhaps they would be better described as the entrance gates. NYC Parks - Gates of Life. FYI: Attribution (CC BY 2.0) Flickr Photo of the gate if you have interest in displaying it.
Article: The main entrance has a sculpture by Albino Manca and Clarke & Rapuano, known as Gates of Life.
Sadly there is no freedom of panorama for artwork in the US. The image itself may be freely licensed, but it cannot be uploaded to Wikipedia unless the sculpture is also freely licensed or in the public domain. Epicgenius (talk) 00:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Section:Description

[edit]
  • First paragraph within Aviary has aggressive in-sentence citation. Would you please review the paragraph for consistency with the wider article? With the triple digit citation numbers appearing at most pieces of punctuation, lots of space has become distracting from the prose.
  • Sentence should end with a period after quail: peacocks, Chinese pheasants, and quail,[44] After the zoo reopened in 1992,

References

[edit]
  • Ref 5 - |url-status=dead and the archive is also dead. Please update to an alternative archive link which provides the pdf.
  • Ref 169 is to http://maps.nyc.gov/. I hoped the share functionality would retain the location, zoom, and selected lot but it doesn't seem to have that capability. I don't think this is a good enough reference.
    • Unfortunately, this is occasionally a problem for maps published by municipal and state governments. I changed the URL and added an instruction to "search for '53-51 111th St, Corona, NY, 11368, USA'" to the ref. Technically, providing instructions is discouraged, but I don't see any other way around it. Epicgenius (talk) 00:57, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
