On last large change and future improvement

[edit]

Just a minute ago I committed a large change to the article. Some thing to note: the pervious version of the article mentioned that The Circumnavigation of the Earth was the title of the work, but I have never seen this mentioned anywhere else. The only title I've read in the referenced works is the Periodos to Nicomedes so I've used that instead.

More annoying is that I can't find a good easily readable English translation. All I know of is this 19th century publication by Meineke which contains the original Greek with Latin commentary, or something (don't understand either language). Even for an original text this leaves a lot to be desired because the text is difficult to read and was not recognized by OCR, so there is no plain text version of the original. Hopefully someone could find anything better?

A source still needs to be found to back up the claim that the Periodos to Nicomedes was published in Augsburg in 1600, I didn't see it mentioned in the source of Bunbury. Using the reference to Diller, it should be explained in a more elaborate way why Pausanias of Damascus is most likely the real author.

Finally, I think the Periodos to Nicomedes deserves its own article once we have enough information, but for now I think it's best if we add a description of the content to this article. AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 15:56, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
