what is indole postive Proteus?

Indole positive Proteus is a species from the genus Proteus that can break down Tryptophan as an ennergy source. In an indol test Kovac's reagent is used to determine if the enzyme Tryptophanase is released. A positive test will indicate a red precipitate.

Paradoxical content: Not lactose-fermenting?

[edit]

On the proteus page, top right, it shows reddened MacConkey agar as a test of Proteus. But on the Monconkey agar page, it says the reddened color is a sign of lactose fermentation. But the Proteus page shows that Proteus does not ferment lactose. So there is a conflict here to be solved. Either P.Vulgaris does ferment lactose, or the test agar was not Macconkey type, or something else is wrong. Curious Violet (talk) 21:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
