Use of term "Worlds"

Having only seen the first seven or so eps perhaps this changes but I've never heard them in the show refer to the different times as "worlds." Given that they're distinct time periods of the same world/universe wouldn't it make sense to refer to them as "times", "settings", "locations" or something else besides worlds, which implies a distinctness which I don't think is warranted? I know that when I checked out this entry before seeing the show the use of "worlds" was confusing as it implied that these existed as seperate universes, rather than being different time periods in the same universe. Nope, a lot of this article seems to be fancruft that's completely unsubstantiated within the show. The bit on London is just crazy; it's clear from the show itself that the present-day bits are set in a world that's fundamentally the same as the one we live in (the latest episode ends with artefacts from Egypt being shipped off to Pyongyang). 82.69.43.141 (talk) 22:42, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. I've partially changed, don't have the patience to do the whole thing, some of the usage of "worlds" to "eras" and other similar terms (except where the use of "world" felt appropriate) and I've removed some of the confusing reference to London. To me a lot of the language implied that the series is set in some alternate pocket universe ala The Matrix where some undistinguished city covers everything. Butterfly Effect

I removed a statement that "the Primeval universe follows the Butterfly Effect theory as popularised by Ray Bradbury in his story "A Sound of Thunder", rather than the "many worlds" universe which appears in Star Trek." First "Butterfly Effect" in this context is a trivial, almost unnoticed change in the past with enormous consequences to the future. In Primeval, changes to the past which effect the future are not inconsequential - this being the source of the drama.

Also, while there is indeed a multi-worlds/other dimensions in Star Trek, Star Trek also has episodes where Time Travel is shown to have serious consequences for the present (well, their present).

Finally, the removed statement seems redundant.

Creationism ?

There was a sentence at the end of the Cosmology section which states that the details of the Primeverse are based on science (fictional, but still science-esque), as opposed to something like Creationism. I think this statement is true but I am confused as to why this needs to be mentioned at all. I do not recall any instance where a spiritual or divine origin for the anomalies was mentioned.

I am by no means a fan of creationism -- not in the slightest -- but, unless I am really missing something here, there seems to be no reason to make any reference to it in an article about this TV show.

Cosmology

I have not seen this program so I may easily be missing something, but there seems to be a contradiction in the section Cosmology. There is a mention of the 'multiverse' conceptive which allow for unconnected timelines, but then later the section points out that the Primeverse is not like the one seen in Star Trek and implies that the different time periods are all part of a connected timeline. If this is the case then the reference to mulitiverse should be removed or modified. (Unless, of course, I'm just missing something about this program.)

I watched all the episodes from both seasons and have gone in and removed the statement that "that the past and the future exists independently of the present, in a fourth dimension, is the most important point of the Primeval Universe." I think it is precisely the opposite - the past, present and future are not independent. Right from the begining Cutter tries to return prehistoric animals to the past instead of killing or capturing them, although he had no problem with killing the Future Predator which is more dangerous but also from their future and so changes there cannot effect the present. He does mention explicitly that there is a huge danger of Future Predators in the Permian because they could change the course of evolution.

The mutability of the timeline is show explicitly at the end of S1 when Cutter returns to the present to find it has changed and that Claudia Brown does not exist (later she shows up, but as a different person.... its a long story, but the point is that changes in the past altered the present), the 'Home Office' is now the 'Anomaly Research Center.' Likewise at the end of Season 2 Helen Cutter's Evil Plan is to make changes in the present and see how they will alter the future, and at the very end of the last show in S2 she is at Stephen Hart's grave and clearly intends to make other changes so that in an altered timeline he is not dead.

In other words, the premise is clearly that the anomalies connect to different periods in the past and the future and that these are part of one single timeline and so I removed the statement in the cosmology section which stated the opposite.

"Numerous self-contained worlds" or simply different times in the same world?

Having watched all three series of Primeval, I'm not aware of any justification that the anomalies lead to worlds separate from our own. My interpretation of events has always been that the anomalies lead to our own world, just at different times. Which sources support the multiple-world interpretation of Primeval? I don't think there are any sources to support either point of view. I suppose some people would look at the anomalies as wormholes; not only through time but through space as well to parallel universes a la the Multiverse theory. I'd agree with you that it just leads to different points in time in the same universe, but as far as I'm aware there has been no confirmation on which theory is correct.
