Current President of India

The entire section on the Current President should be deleted after ensuring that all the information is included in the article on Abdul Kalam. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DarkCrusader (talkcontribs)

Unfortunately, no criticism is offered about the president, his need, his actions through the years, etc. Perhaps someone could add a section on the various criticism involving the Indian Presidents to make the article more rounded. Priyatu 12:54, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

i do not know how to edit but an error is an error. It needs to be fixed.I beg to bring to your notice, the mistake in the introductory page titled 'President of India'. (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/President_of_India#Election_of_the_President). It is written 'The current President of the Republic of India is Sourav Ganguly and sometimes Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (APJ) Abdul Kalam .[1]'. Kindly correct it. Where did Sourav Ganguly come from in this page and how can he be the President of India along with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam ?. I know errors are expected in such a ocean of knowledge like Wikipedia. But this issue is quiet sensitive. Kindly correct it at the earliest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.164.2.75 (talk) 02:57, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

How many presidents?

In Abdul Kalam's page ( http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Abdul_Kalam ) it says "11th President of India In office July 25, 2002 – July 25, 2007". On this page, it says "The 13th current President of India [...] was sworn in on 25 July 2007". I think we're missing a president there somewhere. Iron Condor (talk) 03:05, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Presidential standard

I'm confused about the image described as the presidential standard in this article. Shouldn't there be a link to the previous President? It looks like this page was re-written by political hacks before the man even took his oath of office. Derogatory description

"& thus The President acts as the representative of the HM government as Lord Governor General & As Head of State of India giving him the title of 'His Excellency The Right Honourable Lord Governor General & President Of The Commonwealth Dominion Republic Of India.[11][12]"

This explanation is contrary to the reality. We no more have the post of "Lord Governer general" ! It is abolished the moment India become a republic ! On January 26,1952. The description "commonwealth dominion of Republic of India" republics can't be dominions. We are only a member of Commonwealth realms we are not are dominion. Hence I'm going to delete these senstencea if nobody contests my explanation ! Naveen Reddy

You are right, this seems like an contrary statement. I could not find anything referring to the same in the references provided. This might be deleted. Amartyabag TALK2ME 14:38, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

@Amartyabag Thank you ! Naveen Reddy (talkcontribs) 02:02, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

@Amartyabag, @Naveen Reddy, : Well the paragraph was refering to the origin of the post of the President of India. And "Despite its changed status, India's leaders desired the country to remain a member of the Commonwealth.[9] Previously a change to republican status had been seen as incompatible with continued membership, but negotiations with the other Commonwealth members resulted in recognition of George VI as a ceremonial Head of the Commonwealth. India thus became the first republic[10] to belong to the Commonwealth and this precedent was followed in subsequent decades by other countries that either adopted a monarchy separate from that shared by the Commonwealth realms or became republics" is true. The last sentence is not true. But why remove the whole paragraph?? Eliaskurian (talk) 16:21, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Reviewer: Ssriram mt (talk · contribs) 01:27, 25 May 2013 (UTC) I would take up the review of the article.

Initial points

I was tempted to fast fail mainly because of the following

  • lot of grammatical errors - ex. "Juridical"
  • ref structure is not uniform - some references lack basic parameters
  • lot of incomplete sentences lacking full information like " receive INR10,000 (US$200) per month as per the Constitution" - when?, " It has never been declared" - from when?
  • why so many sentence breaks - every sentence is a para is some cases.
  • overall copy-edit - need to have uniform style.
  • images lack alt.

I will leave one week for improvement. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:27, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Review

Done. But i think juridical is a correct term.(pl.ref to dictionary and the article president of USA) Suri 100 (talk) 14:23, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Still not done - Universal's Guide to the Constitution of India, Commonwealth Secretariat" and some other short citations have missing parms. "Juridical" part - check here. US and Indian presidential systems are totally different - just that they are democracies.Ssriram mt (talk) 14:38, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Can you be more specific in telling what parameters are missing in the ref such as the ref you mentioned above? So change the word Juridicial to Judicial? Suri 100 (talk) 02:31, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

There are certain references which lack basic parameters like title, accessdate, date, location (for news), author, isbn (for books), volume(for journals). I think some of the references are still not using standard templates - ref no.s 13, 28,29(pg instead of p in others), 32,34,39, 49 53,57,63,64,67,70,71,72,. Ref 47 is not reliable.Ssriram mt (talk) 11:42, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Very painstakingly fixed to some extent. Suri 100 (talk) 14:01, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Also please note that all websites do not publish information, such as publishers name etc,. Suri 100 (talk) 14:03, 26 May 2013 (UTC). I tried to find them but couldnt.Suri 100 (talk) 14:04, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Check Wikipedia:Reliable sources - there are quite a few unreliable ones quoted as source. Also the basic parameters highlighted above are still missing in some. Once alternate reliable refs are placed, i will start the section-wise review.Ssriram mt (talk) 19:20, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

 Done Suri 100 (talk) 13:36, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Not done - refs 3,4,7 are unreliable - also try to avoid text books as sources. ref universal, news item on zeenews lack parms. Take your time to make changes - there is no rush. I will also see if i can improve the article.Ssriram mt (talk) 14:21, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

OK :D .Suri 100 (talk) 14:24, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

There are way too many ref fixes that would be needed. Books - last, first parameter, title, isbn, pages; news - date, publisher; web - accessdate, publisher. There are lot of duplicate and unreliable references - short citation style would be needed - refer Wikipedia:Citations#Short_citations. I will leave the article in hold status to see improvements.Ssriram mt (talk) 15:47, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
FYI, although it is good go have well-formatted references, that is not a part of Wikipedia:Good article criteria.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:43, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
But MOS criteria covers this - Wikipedia:CITE#General_references. I seek addition of basic ref parms and removal of duplicate references.Ssriram mt (talk) 12:11, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
I can help with ref formatting, but before that the issue of reliability needs to be sorted out. Please replace unreliable sources first.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:01, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Ok, here is the plan. I will go over all the references. Meanwhile, the nominator should address all the other issues raised by the reviewer (which are much more important). It would take me several days. Please do not change anything in the present references, unless I ask for something, and except if you want to replace some unreliable sources.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:28, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
OK.Suri 100 (talk) 13:32, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
I went over the references, rater quickly. I saw them only for technical purpose, not for the quality, although a few times I added tags. After the initial some examples, I did not address the references that were from school level text books, those need to be changed. Also, I did not address some references that were from Pratiyogita Darpan or Upakar Prakashan (same). I am not sure if Pratiyogita Darpan would be considered as reliable source.
Vakilno1 will not be a reliable source, replace that. I have added some other tags, such as page needed. Please address those. Also, one reference (interview of a president in Doordarshan, published by The Hindu). I was unsure of its format, so kept it as it is, for now.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:26, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
But the content of the act published by vaikono.1 is from mha(Ministry of home affairs)Suri 100 (talk) 12:10, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Already  Done.Suri 100 (talk) 13:23, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Still, this vakilno1 site seems unreliable. You can directly use the act as a source. Text of such acts should be available in Law Ministry website. See this.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:10, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
The unreliable/missing parms of the ref structure still remains. Dwaipayan & Suri - how do you want to take this - I prefer the article be reworked off the review as it is already 10 days from the point of hold. I see lot of improvements, but it still needs quite more. Ssriram mt (talk) 01:38, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Is president the head of Indian judiciary?

1st Paragraph: "The President is the formal head of the executive, legislature and judiciary of India" The President is the executive head as all executive actions are taken in his name. It may be argued that he is the head of legislature since he has to sign all the bills. But is he really the head of Indian Judiciary? Eliaskurian (talk) 07:49, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Conside editing the 'Election Process'

1) The larger states need not get more votes. Its the population that matters. For instance Bihar gets more votes than Madhya Pradesh. And votes of MLA depend on the states population and the number of MLAs from that state. For instance an MLA from Kerala (with lesser area and population) has more votes than an MLA from Rajastan.

2) It will be better of someone can put the vote calculation as mathematical formula. Rather than writing sentence.

ie Vote of MLA = Population of the concerned state/(1000*no of MLAs from that state)
Vote of MP = Total votes of all MLAs/Number of elected MPs.

3) I think the paragraph-

"Each elector casts a different number of votes. The general principle is that the total number of votes cast by Members of Parliament equals the total number of votes cast by State Legislators. Also, legislators from larger states cast more votes than those from smaller states. Finally, the number of legislators in a state matters; if a state has few legislators, then each legislator has more votes; if a state has many legislators, then each legislator has fewer votes." should come below the vote calculation procedure and not above it.

4) The introduction paragraph on President of India says "If no candidate receives a majority of votes, then there is a system by which losing candidates are eliminated from the contest and their votes are transferred to other candidates, until one gains a majority." Isn't it better to have this sentence under the election section. It will keep the introduction concise and elegant. Eliaskurian (talk) 08:08, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

"If no candidate receives a majority of votes, then there is a system by which losing candidates are eliminated from the contest and their votes are transferred to other candidates, until one gains a majority." Is this system the same as the single transferable vote system? If yes, the sentence can be edited for conciseness and linked. FelixSeba7 (talk) 10:18, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

The last line of the last paragraph in the introductory text, "He is also the first Bengali to be elected as President" is unnecessary and has no significance. "Bengali" is not a clear or well-defined term, and this statement should be removed. Ashish Kushwaha 14:56, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

President vs others Suggestion

@IP @183.82.199.109:-The portion that you deleted may have been there a long time but the portion was in direct violation in WP:NOTTEXTBOOK more over the portion was sparsely sourced. Also the text does not have a counterpart in any of the similar articles such as President of USA,President of Russia etc. Thanks -Forceradical (talk) 06:04, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

You have deleted the content and not me. I restored the content which has been their for long time. The content is sufficiently sourced by references. If you have any specific observation (including false content), please indicate here for rectification. The content is not a primary text book content to teach freshers about the president of India. However, every content has some academic angle and that is also readers seek. It need not resemble other articles like President of USA,President of Russia etc. because the powers and duties are vastly different. President of India's duty is to defend, protect and preserve the Indian constitution from government and law makers only (rest is looked after by the prime minister, state chief ministers, judiciary, parliament, state assemblies, etc) whereas in US or Russia presidents are very powerful without prime minister or with subordinate prime minister per their constitutions. So comparison with prime minister / judiciary does not arise in those countries. In India, the basic duty identified by the Indian constitution for the president is judicial in nature unlike in USA/Russia, so the comparison between Judiciary and president does not arise prominently in those countries. I do not think, any two articles in Wikipedia resemble fully with same style, formatting and pattern (exp: President of USA and President of Russia). Some additional unique 'sections' may be needed in each case.183.82.199.109 (talk) 13:22, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
