Perfection of Wisdom

[edit]

There is already an article about this at the English title, Perfection of Wisdom. The content in this article should be moved there. --mav

Should the combined article appear under the English or Sanskrit title? How will this choice relate to the non-English versions? This is a general question and applies to other subjects such as Lotus sutra or Saddharmapundarika. -- rossum

It should be under the English - unless the term is in fact better known by English speakers under the Sanskrit title. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (anglicization) for the reasoning. --mav

Will do. Thanks for the advice. --rossum

Are you sure that Prajnaparamita is also part of Theravada Buddhism? My impression is that it is only found in Mahayana scriptures. Cem-uk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cem-uk (talkcontribs) 12:46, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Extensive revision of Introduction

[edit]

I rewrote and reorganized the introduction for purposes of style and clarity. I made it shorter for one thing, and got rid of some repetition and so on. I wasn't trying to change the substance or say anything controversial.OldMonkeyPuzzle (talk) 21:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Prajnaparamita School

[edit]

There is a section called "Prajnaparamita School" that was merged from a page bearing this title. As I understand it, there is no evidence that the Prajnaparamita sutras or philosophy ever comprised a school of their own. It has been widely acknowledged that the first stand-alone school of Mahayana philosophy was the Madhyamaka school of Nagarjuna. Before this point, there was no systematic view of Mahayana philosophy in the form of philosophical discourses (shastras), nor any formal affiliation of any kind with a school of "Prajnaparamita philosophy." If some sort of evidence cannot be given for the existence of such a school, this section should be removed. Tengu800 (talk) 21:30, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tibetan

[edit]

The Tibetan for this term was already in the language box, and is superfluous in the intro to the article. The material removed is below for reference:

Standard Tibetan: ཤེར་ཕྱིན་, ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པ་, sherchin; Wylie sher phyin, sherab kyi parol tu shinpa

Translation of "Prajna Paramita"

[edit]

I need to take issue with the use of the word "translation" in this context.

The box at the left lists several "translations" of the phrase, yet the only one that is not a transliteration http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Transliteration seems to be English. I do not know Sanskrit, but I do know Thai, and given that much of Thai is based both semantically and in its orthography on Sanskrit/Pali, it might be more appropriate to call the Thai version given on this page a "rendering" rather than a translation. The sound is almost the same as "prajna paramita." I also know Chinese, and can say definitively that 般若波罗蜜多 is simply a transliteration of "prajna paramita."

Thanks for your input. I've moved this point over to the Template talk:Infobox Buddhist term. Best regards. Tengu800 16:38, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Prajnaparamita v. Perfection of Wisdom

[edit]

I'd like to suggest we move the page from Prajnaparamita back to Perfection of Wisdom as the English term is very common and certainly clearer. Ogress smash! 16:33, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose I don't agree. "Perfection of Wisdom" is not the common term, as far as I can see. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 17:26, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Is there another translation which is more common @Joshua Jonathan:? — goethean 20:50, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose I agree with Joshua Jonathan. Although also consider moving to "Prajnaparamita Sutras".VictoriaGraysonTalk 23:54, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant idea! Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 04:01, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Then there is no article for Prajnaparamita as a concept. Meanwhile, there are already some articles for Prajnaparamita sutras such as the Diamond Sutra and the Heart Sutra. Fwiw, the term Prajnaparamita is common enough in Mahayana Buddhism that it warrants being kept in its original Sanskrit form (Prajnaparamita), just as is done with Nirvana and Samadhi. Undefined abbreviation

[edit]

The abbreviation "PP" is introduced without being defined. Could someone please correct this? Beeflin (talk) 10:28, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's just abbreviating Prajñāpāramitā. I've removed the abbreviations. --Spasemunki (talk) 19:47, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
