100th anniversary ceremony
[edit]Popping a few notes here about the ceremony today (4 October 2024) that marked 100 years since the original unveiling.
- This local news article implies that the memorial was unveiled 100 years ago from today (04/10/2024). The actual original unveiling date was 15 October 1924 (as currently in the article).
- The CWGC news article currently gives an original unveiling date of 14 October 1924 and stated that the unveiling was by King George V (this is very likely incorrect, but hopefully will be fixed).
- The CWGC memorial page correctly states: "The Portsmouth Naval Memorial was unveiled by the Duke of York (the future George VI) on 15 October 1924." (unless this has been an error all along).
I leave it to other editors to decide the amount of detail needed for this and the original and later ceremonies. Pinging Harry, as may be of interest. Carcharoth (talk) 18:36, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Carcharoth thanks! These three are on my to-do list but it's a long list within a long list! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:56, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HJ Mitchell, just a quick note (I know you are likely busy with other articles) to say that I have been able to find out (from an excellent thesis, which I will point out to you another time) that the local newspaper carried fairly extensive coverage of the Portsmouth unveiling ceremony: 'Unveiling of Portsmouth's Naval Memorial', Hampshire Telegraph and Post, 17 October 1924. I am sure similar will exist for the other two Commission naval memorials to the missing unveiled earlier in the year (an interesting one that also received lots of interest due to Kitchener being on it was the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton which we cover in Hollybrook Cemetery - it was unveiled by Robertson in 1930). Do you have access to a newspaper archive that has that October 1924 article digitised? Carcharoth (talk) 02:50, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- What are you doing editing at 4am, @Carcharoth? ;) Newspapers.com is apparently available via the Wikipedia Library but either I don't have a proper subscription or my search skills aren't up to par. @SchroCat managed to dig up a report on Busbridge. Perhaps you could help, Schro? For what it's worth, I'd be shocked if The Times or the other nationals didn't have detailed coverage given the huge significance and the unveiling by royalty. I have copies of most of the literature on the CWGC and I expect these memorials are well documented in that; Tower Hill certainly was. - I'll see what I can find... - SchroCat (talk) 16:47, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Emailed it across to you Harry. I've sent you the national reports for the moment, but if you need some local ones for more colour, just let me know. Ditto, if there are any specific details you want chasing down, just ping me and I'll see what I can find. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 06:49, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
