Question in Curating

[edit]

I came to Wikipedia to research the portrait for an art exhibit I am planning to curate at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.

I am asking myself, "Is there a difference between a painted portrait and portraiture in a broader sense?" My opinion is yes, I believe there is a difference. Thus it deserves a separate article. The relationship of portrait photography and portraiture is similar to portrait painting and the meta-idea of portrait. Each is a sub-article of the main entry for Portrait.

Perhaps the confusing aspect is the lack of modernity in definition of what a portrait can be. See Portrait (disambiguation) The everyday meaning, "a visual likeness of a person" limits contemporary notions of representing a person. Portrait painting describes the delination best when saying "the intent [of portrait painting] is to depict the visual appearance of the subject, mostly a person, whereas the portrait is expected to show the essence of the subject." Furthermore, in the literature occurance (Portrait (literature)), "the term portrait refers to a written description or analysis of a person or thing."

So in addition to a visual likeness, a portrait can also convey the essence or provide a description of a person or object. This becomes the meta idea of the word portrait.

The missing article is the contemporary Portrait. What about still life as portrait? A collection of keepsakes or items rpresentational of a hobby visually represented with paint or photography. Assemblage as selfportrait could be the contents of a woman's purse. Is a sound a portrait?

This is the question I will ask when investigating Contemporary Portraits for the exhibition.

Any comments?

Merge

[edit]

Support, and chuck in Portrait as well - half the text is the same anyway! Johnbod 19:08, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How's about merging the three into Portrait? --sparkitTALK 15:48, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
yes. Johnbod 16:16, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I merged Portraiture and Portrait, but discussion on Talk:Portrait doesn't show consensus for merging Portrait painting. I'll look at that later. --sparkitTALK 16:36, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, perhaps that is a merge too far after all. The article needs expanding though Johnbod 19:08, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirected

[edit]

This was an obvious WP:DABCONCEPT page, but all the senses are already covered at Portrait; redirected, per the earlier merge. bd2412 T 20:37, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
