Discovered in 2001 ?

In this reference [1] it's mentioned that both pomalidomide and lenalidomide went into clinical trials in 1999. So it's impossible it was invented in 2001. Discuss?

Structure activity studies with hundred of compounds were done from 1994 to 2000 in the D'Amato lab. The results with amino-thalidomide were finally published in the papers in 2001 and 2002, which described the dual anti-angiogenic and anti-myeloma activity. The 2001/2002 papers are the first report of this anti-myeloma activity, but the compound was identified long before the final publication.
