Where's the Chief?!

[edit]

In the US, Police commissioner is pretty much limited to a few big cities. Every town I've ever heard of -- and most cities as well -- use "Police Chief" or "Chief of Police".

If I had to guess, there might be about a dozen jurisdictions where "Commissioner" is used. NYC, Chicago, L.A., etc. -- BIG places.

Without looking up every last one, I would venture that a lot of secondary cities (Detroit, Miami, Phoenix, Denver, etc.) use "Chief" as well.

The article is misleading as currently worded.

This article is about police commissioners, not American police titles. There is a world outside the USA, in case you have not noticed.122.59.73.31 (talk) 09:57, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Detroit is in the USA. The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners is an oversight body and the Chief is the top cop.--Panther999 (talk) 18:54, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

UK commissioners

[edit]

Police commissioners were often ex-Army, but to refer to a "previous practice of appointing former British Army officers" suggests the source was automatic. It certainly was not.122.59.73.31 (talk) 09:58, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

German Kommissar

[edit]

In most of the german states (Bundesländer) the Kommissar is the lowest rank of police officers, as there is no longer a Sergeant-like police rank. They study for 3 years at an administration college and end with a B.A. 80.136.128.66 (talk) 09:47, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
