Original album release date / year?
[edit]I received the following comment from an unregistered user:
- "...Are we sure that Place Vendôme was released in 1966? It was reviewed in the March 11, 1967 (p.47) Billboard Magazine, which usually does the review just after the album is released. I believe it was released in '67 and nominated for the 1967 Best Performance by a Chorus Grammy..."(Billboard)
and the same (presumably) user added the following related comment to the Talk:The Swingle Singers discography page
- "Read more: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Lqo-lG1sFxUJ:www.metrolyrics.com/1968-grammy-awards.html+grammy+award+nominee+swingle+singers+encounter+1966&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us#ixzz0vLllokEd
- But to get the correct year (1967), cross-compare the above with: http://www2.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/News/Default.aspx?newsID=2752"
I am not sure and I have been unable to find authoritative / consistent references for the original release date of this album. Sources seem to differ - some say 1966, some say 1967. Part of this may be simple errors - confusing the "recording" year for the "release" year. Or the differences may simply reflect the varying release dates for the album in different countries.
The Billboard magazine review and the Grammy award info provided above might suggest a 1967 release date in the U.S. The album was nominated for a Grammy award in the 1967 'Grammy year'[1] but that doesn't necessarily mean the album was released in 1967. Some thoughts on these references:
- 1) Billboard magazine reviews (presumably) only U.S. album releases. Likewise Grammy award nominations are given to (only) U.S. releases. It is possible (likely?) that Encounter (the U.S. title for the Place Vendôme recording) was released sometime after the French release. So even if the original (French) release was in 1966, the U.S. release could easily have been in 1967. Wikipedia album infobox practice is to list the original (first / earliest) official release date of an album - wherever that may have occured.
- 2) Albums eligible for 1967 Grammy awards are those released between Oct. 1 1966 and Sept. 30 1967.[2] It seems relatively well documented that the Place Vendôme album was recorded in 1966 in Paris between September 27 and October 30. So even if the album was released in the U.S. in (November or December of) 1966, it would be classified as a "1967" album for Grammy eligibility purposes.
Other thoughts:
- 3) I'm not an industry expert, but there is obviously some amount of time needed between the end of recording and the first release of an album on vinyl. Mixing, Mastering, Pressing, Packing, Shipping. If the recording sessions for this album ended on October 30, 1966, how likely is it that the album was released before Dec. 31 that year? On the other hand, maybe 4 weeks is considered an adequate amount of time for releasing an album once recording has ended and Philips wanted to rush the album into stores for the '66 Christmas shopping season in France / Europe???
I plan to keep researching this but if anyone else finds a definitive source for the first release date of this album, please add that source to the article and (if necessary) change the release date / year in the infobox) Pugetbill (talk) 15:47, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- ^ Note: the "Grammy year" is the year of album eligibility. The awards for those albums are presented at an awards ceremony early in the following year. So an album released (in the U.S.) in December 1981 would qualify for a 1982 Grammy award that would be presented in the early 1983 Grammy award ceremony.
- ^ at least those seem to be the typical eligibility-year 'cutoff' dates through ~2009. It appears recent (2010/2011) changes have pushed eligibility back to August-end of the preceding year.
Page title
[edit]This page has a bit of an awkward title, but I can't think of a better place to move it to. Just Place Vendôme (album) could work under WP:DIFFCAPS, but then Place Vendome (Place Vendome album) would likely be moved to Place Vendome (album). I guess we could hatnote it?
