The OED (Compact edition 1971)does not recognize this use of "pitcher". A pitcher is basically a jug often of terracotta, from which grog is sometimes made, though presumably always from fragments (more properly shards, sherds or potsherds) of the vessel. Grog is sometimes known as sherd temper.See Rice, Prudence M. Pottery analysis: a sourcebook. Chicago: University of Chicago Press; 1987, p. 74 and elsewhere. I suggest therefore that this article be retitled Grog (ceramic material.

Pitcher may well be a jug in America, but it is not elsewhere. Pitchers are a type of waste ceramic ware. Who'd have thought that a word can have different definitions .. amazing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.70.140.152 (talk) 14:06, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just because the first contributor to this discussion has not heard of this use of 'pitcher' does not mean it is invalid. And in respect of "I suggest therefore that this article be retitled Grog (ceramic material)"' I suggest the contributor increases their experience to avoid making flawed comments and inappropriate suggestions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.171.40.183 (talk) 00:13, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
