[edit]

There are two images at Italian Wikipedia that would be good here, if I were handier at doing the move: if you'll just move 'em, I'll provide formatting and captions. --Wetman 12:02, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of 'Popolo'

[edit]

I have heard that the name derives from popolus, the Italian for 'hamlet', which is what stood here among fields in the Middle Ages and became the garthering point for people entering Rome at the end of the Via Flaminia. Can this be confirmed - it is quite different from the origin of the name given in the article.

I believe I remember from my trip to Rome it meaning people. So plaza of the people and saint mary of the people (Santa Maria del Popolo) 85.24.87.178 (talk) 09:32, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"historically it derives from the poplars (populus in Latin, pioppo in Italian" which has been given the folk etymology after the fact. --Wetman (talk) 10:24, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Via Lata

[edit]

Just one doubt. It's true that the Via del Corso is an extension of the Via Flaminia (or the other way round if you prefer), but I don't recall the Via del Corso being called "Via Flaminia" in ancient times. Shouldn't that be Via Lata? The article says this name was taken on only in the middle ages, but I remember this is the antique name. Can anyone shine his/her light on this?

Obelisk

[edit]

I rather think it's worth mentioning that the obelisk in Piazza del Popolo is under renovation. I was in Rome just recently and it was covered by a tarp... Here's a pic: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Thrashmeister/vacation2006229.jpg

I guess I'll add it for now and anyone can make changes if they need to. ø,¸¸,ThRaShMeIsTeR,¸¸,ø 14:00, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have an external link to propose. It would take to a page with views of the square from past centuries: http://www.romanbookshelf.com. What do you think about it? Diegom-08 09:37, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
