Year of birth
[edit]There has been some confusion over Piara Khabra's year of birth; almost all biographical guides say 1924 because that was the information which he gave to them, but there was some suspicion that he was older and the Guardian obituary today seems to confirm it. I also wonder whether it's worth noting that he was the last WWII veteran MP? Fys. Ta fys aym. 10:12, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Who is the oldest sitting MP now? If I had to guess it would be Ian Paisley. Dovea 17:06, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
- It is Ian Paisley - the only MP born in the 1920s. Second oldest is Sir Peter Tapsell, followed by Sir Gerald Kaufman, Robert Wareing, Alan Williams, Gwyneth Dunwoody, Dennis Skinner, David Winnick, Joe Benton, and Michael Mates rounding out the top ten. Eleventh is the Independent MP Dr Richard Taylor. Sam Blacketer 15:19, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
His being the oldest MP until his death is well attested in the obits, but none seems to mention him being the last to have served in WWII. Is there a source that we can quote for that? -- ALoan (Talk) 21:43, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortunately no newspaper seemed to spot it, but Jack Straw did mention it at Business Questions on Thursday when paying tribute. Sam Blacketer 22:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointer. Here it is. And Hansard.-- ALoan (Talk) 23:44, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Picture
[edit]I added a picture, but its pretty small, but well thats the only free one i had, but i seem to have it on the top of the pach for some reason, anyone know how to sort that out? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanovar (talk • contribs) 20:52, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
If the 1921 year of birth is accepted then he appears to be the oldest MP at first election in modern times. Has any obituary noted this? Warofdreams talk 00:32, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Khabra's parliamentary votes
[edit]How did he vote "very strongly" on some issues? Did he stamp his feet and bellow his way through the division lobbies? Likewise, when he voted "moderately", did he sort of shuffle through the lobbies looking faintly embarrassed? Votes are for or against; they are not capable of the gradations indicated here. He may have spoken strongly for or against the issues listed, but in the end he just voted. Brianboulton (talk) 15:22, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
