Contradiction

"As bishop, Sötern was a noted proponent of the Counter-Reformation. During the Thirty Years' War, he allied with the Kingdom of France and the Protestant Union against Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor."

Why would an opponent of Reformation become an ally of the Protestant Union? Going against the Catholic League, Spain and the staunchly Catholic emperor?--Catlemur (talk) 16:32, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
