A Mess
[edit]One of the paragraphs in the Folklore section was apparently reduced to gibberish in a botched edit; it seems okay in October 2016 but went wrong shortly after. I went back through some versions trying to find one I could salvage, but don't know enough (in fact don't know anything at all) about the subject to trust my judgment. Someone else should have a go, because it's unintelligible. Thanx. - Chelydra — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.6.218.217 (talk) 06:00, 7 December 2017 (UTC) Here's how it is now... (please fix!)
″In Shan folklore of Nanzhao Kingdom (now southern China and Southeast Asia during the 8th and 9th centuries, which was centered on present-day Yunnan in China.) believed Erhai lake is inhabited of Naga and is the creator of the Mekong.[2]"
ALSO: The section headings — folklore, appearance, history and popular culture — seem to be used more or less interchangeably here. It might make as much sense to just consolidate the whole article and try it give it some logical structure... Or maybe a chronological development would work... how the imagery and mythology have evolved over time? - Chelydra again
Picture
[edit]Is it just me, or does that picture look like an oarfish?--MacRusgail 02:20, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Yes
[edit]I was just going to say that, as soon as i saw the picture i wanted to suggest it. Should someone look into this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.121.23.125 (talk) 07:34, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
I think this photo was taken her in the U. S.. The men in the picture are in the Navy and found this oarfish of the coast of San Diego. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.30.177.86 (talk) 01:44, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- It very clearly is of an oarfish, I found the original picture with a caption describing it as such. So...I'm deleting the erroneous photo and all references to it in the article. Cameron 00:48, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh wait, no references in the article, only the caption, haha. Cameron 00:53, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Merge with Nāga
[edit]It has been proposed that Phaya Naga be merged with Nāga. I'm greatly in favor of a merger, even to include Naga fireballs, as it would help greatly in editing Rocket Festival and Funan.Lee 16:39, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- Quote from Nāga
Stories involving the nāgas are still very much a part of contemporary cultural traditions in predominantly Hindu regions of Asia (India, Nepal, and the island of Bali). In India, nāgas are considered nature spirits and the protectors of springs, wells and rivers. They bring rain, and thus fertility, but are also thought to bring disasters such as floods and drought. According to traditions nāgas are only malevolent to humans when they have been mistreated. They are susceptible to mankind's disrespectful actions in relation to the environment. They are also associated with waters — rivers, lakes, seas, and wells — and are generally regarded as guardians of treasure.
It is the same tradition in Thailand and Laos.
- The Enûma Elish states that Tiamat gave birth to dragons and serpents.
- The symbol was once a dragon for the Lao race in what is now southwestern China, but became a Naga under the influence of Indianization.--Pawyilee (talk) 11:30, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Merger
[edit]I just edited the article to add a reference for the poem, but don't have Lao script for it. I still favor the merger, even though the tag has been removed. --Pawyilee (talk) 10:39, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
