Sonn on the carpet over alleged drunken behaviour at Cup match February 14, 2003 Edition -1

United Cricket Board of SA president Percy Sonn is to appear before the body's general council "in the next few days" regarding allegations that he was drunk and behaved inappropriately at a World Cup match function in Paarl.

UCB chief executive officer Gerald Majola said yesterday he was aware of media reports regarding Sonn's behaviour at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.

"I have spoken with Percy and he will get the opportunity to discuss the matter with the UCB general council in the next few days," said Majola.

"Until that discussion has taken place, it is inappropriate for the UCB to make any further comment on the issue."

Yesterday, the New National Party, the Freedom Front and the Democratic Alliance called on Sonn to apologise to South Africa and the world's cricket community for his alleged misconduct, foul language and drunkenness at the function during the cricket match between India and Holland.

According to a report in the Afrikaans newspaper Beeld, veteran racing driver Sarel van der Merwe had witnessed how Sonn "literally fell out of his pants" and staggered about among Boland Park's private suites.

"One could see that the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, who was there as his guest, was most embarrassed," Van der Merwe is reported to have said.

Sonn apparently shocked people with his crude language. Before putting the phone down on the Beeld reporter, Sonn wanted to know: "Are you looking for k*k (shit) with me?"

DA spokesperson Donald Lee noted that it was not the first time Sonn's behaviour had been called into question.

Lee said: "Sonn's reported drunken and unruly behaviour during the World Cup cricket match in Paarl is an embarrassment to all South Africans, even more so now that the eyes of the world are focused on our country.

"Everyone - players, administrators and spectators - must be on their best behaviour. If the allegations made against Mr Sonn are true, he must apologise to all South Africans."

NNP MP Adriaan van Jaarsveld also called for an apology. - Sapa
