Advance Copy

I am not a member of wikipedia and I have a question about whether something meets wikipedia's standatds. I work for a newspaper and, if an advanced copy of a book is not used for a book review, the reviewer puts them out where anyone can take them. The Titans Curse was one of these books. Would it meet wikipedia's standards to publish spoilers about the plot? Also, The Sea of Monsters should be further explained (as with The Lightning Theif). Could someone please elaborate on this.

Putting down spoilers for an unrealeased book would probably be unnecessary, as it would ruin the plot for many. The earliest day I would adivise adding this would be May 5th, 2007. We are trying our best. Thank You. I hope this helps.

It does. I will wait until then. Thanks!

You are welcome. --Geracudd 00:53, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Could someone please cite a source saying the Manticore appears in the Titan's Curse.--Geracudd 01:12, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Title for Book 4

The title has yet to be released by the author although an update is posted to Rick Riordan's blog http://rickriordan.blogspot.com/2007/04/percy-four-update.html Please note the Gorgon thing is nonsense.

Thanks. I suspected as much.--Geracudd 00:57, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Race

Can anyone add 'Race' to character template that is being used by several pages of characters in this series? I feel it is important since the books deals with many types of cratures, from centaurs to demigods. (Emino 08:31, 8 October 2007 (UTC))

The Big Three

I think there should be an article explaining who the Big Three Are(Posiden, Zeus, and Hades). What ya guys think? King Rock Go 'Skins! 00:14, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

not necessary. instead, let there be a "Characters in Percy Jackson and the Olympians" article and list them under a subsection of "Olympians" as "The Big Three" and explain it there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.233.246.235 (talk) 07:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Higher Standards

all of the articles relating to teh series seriously need higher standards; just reading a few lines of it, i noticed that it sounds more like a brief oral description than an encyclopedia entry. for example, this part of Nico's description in the article for Titan's Curse: "This is when Percy realizes that Hades is their father, but it isn't determined whether or not Nico knows this. Also he hates and wants Percy dead since he did not protect his sister as he promised." it would be better as something like "He now hates Percy because he did not protect Bianca like he had promised."

I find that many of the summary articles here are not very well written. This is a great series, and I think that the articles should be written with a bit more care. I have taken some very small steps in editing them for better flow. As I have the time I will edit more. Aleixa (talk) 18:58, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I second this person's opinion.

Look at this: What we know about The Last Olympian so far:

We get to meet Luke's mom.

We get to meet the goddess, Hestia.

The release date will be 5th May 2009.

The first draft of the book is done and Rick is working on the revisions.

Rick posted the book's title on the 4th September.

This is the last one in the series chronicling Percy Jackson's fight with the Titan lord Kronos. (sources: blue trident)

Who in god's name would just do that?

Alot of articles in about the series need to be cleaned up. Especially with details regarding the fourth book. I just finished it and will try and help some. Thanks! Ehccheehcche (talk) 01:03, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

First kiss with Annabeth

It says in the article that in the Battle of the Labyrinth, "On page 203 Percy and Annabeth share their first kiss." However, in the Sea of Monsters (paperback edition), page 268, "Annabeth planted a kiss on my cheek".

  • I would have deleted the text, but I don't know what to replace it with.
  • Would that sea of monsters kiss count, as they aren't "sharing" the kiss?

Meh, I'm probably treating a wikipedia article as harry potter analysis material. But I thought it was worth pointing out.

Same plot as The Lightning Thief. Very similar parts to the Harry Potter books.--62.0.165.68 (talk) 21:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

The first , the third and the fourth books have borrowed heavily from Apollodorus's Library and also from Heliodorus; it has the same plot, and the same characters. The second book (Sea of Monsters) is based on the Odyssey. It seems that the author tried to follow the plots of his ancient models closely, and he does not hide his intention. Of course, J. K. Rowling also borrowed from Apollodorus, Heliodorus and Aeschilus (for instance, Libation Bearers). This explains the similarities between the two authors. BTW, Rick Riordan seems to know Greek, and to have read his models in Greek. In fact, he is a teacher of Greek mythology, and Apollodorus, Homer, and Heliodorus are likely to be his only models. I do not believe that he got his ideas from Ms Rowling's books. I would like to point out that Rick Riordan made a small mistake. There are two kinds of Cyclops, according to Apollodorus. Three Cyclops are the children of the Earth: Arges, Brontes, and Steropes. Earth's children are very good at working with metals. Posseidon's children do not make metalwork. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.15.20.251 (talk) 04:15, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Bad book summaries

The summaries read like freakin' stuff off the back flap of a book. Wikipedia doesn't care about spoiling, and it's meant to be as un-biased (not a word, but I'm tired) as possible. 71.139.201.85 (talk) 16:40, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I was about to come here to say just the same. The summary of a plot is supposed to cover from the start to the end. It starts by laying out the basic situation in a sentence or two, saying who the main characters are, and then describing in a reasonably concise way what happens to them. It then gives the resolution. Even in a series with extensive hooks into the next volume, there's usually some temporary resolution at the end of a volume, and if not, one says so. the way to do it is to lay the book aside, and try to write as if telling someone a friend or relative who isn't likely to read the book, what the book is about so the next time you go on about how much you like it, he'll understand you. New Percy character page

I'm working on the new Percy page that had been created. I know that the previous page was up for deletion and ended up being redirected to the page about the books, however, the other character, major and some minor, have their own pages, so it seems silly that the protagonist has no character page of his own. Also in regards to this, I think some of the info needs to changed on this page, but that can be discussed at another time Hurricanewest (talk) 07:15, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

How well the books are selling?

I would like to see information on how well the books are selling. I have seen elsewhere that only 1.2 million copies were sold. This is ten times less than Harry Potter. However, I believe that this number does not mirror the reality. The Last Olympian is 54th in Amazon best seller list. The LT is 339th. The PJ boxed set occupies the 90th place. Therefore, best seller lists seems to indicate that the books have sold more than 1,200,000 copies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.15.20.251 (talk) 05:08, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Fansite? Too long?

I don't think this resembles a fansite, and the plot summaries are about as short as they'll get before they get too choppy. Can I remove the tags? Airplaneman talk 22:32, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I strongly disagree. The Characters table definitely resembles a fansite. A lot of the information there is fancruft — excessive amount of intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience. The table is big but it doesn't really tell anyone unfamiliar with the subject anything about the characters. For example, it doesn't mention that Percy, Annabeth and Grover are friends, which would be a pretty important thing to tell readers in this article. The whole section should be rewritten as prose or a list. In terms of the plot summaries being too long, they definitely are. Wikipedia is not plot-only description of fictional works. Coverage of fiction articles on Wikipedia should include and primarily focus on real-world information, which includes coverage of things like the development, reception and a critical analysis of the subject (more examples). In this article there are only nine sentences of real-world information. Approximately 90% of the article is primary information and approximately 60% of the article is plot summary. This article is written is summary style and supposed to be a overview of the entire series. Each novel article already has a more detailed plot summary and there is no need to repeat the entire plot of each novel in this article. All that is required really is about two sentences, like what is in the lead of each novel article. The rest of each novel's subsection in this article should be real-world information. For instance, how about telling readers when each of the books were released? – kollision (talk) 05:56, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
I see. I'll see what I can do. Airplaneman talk 23:39, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Capitalization

Why is the "The" capitalized in the article title? Articles aren't supposed to be capitalized in book titles unless they are the first word, or so I thought. Should I go ahead and ask an admin to move the page over the redirect with the lower case "t", or is there a reason the "The" is capitalized? Thanks, Airplaneman talk 03:30, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

You are correct that capitalizing articles is not normal. However, it is listed on the books as Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Since that is the way the title is written, I would say it's not up to us to change it. Take it up with Rick Riordan! Cheers! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 17:05, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Companion Books Information?

I noticed that we didn't have any information for the companion books, such as The Demigod Files, or the upcoming The Ultimate Guide... Should we add a section for these? I mean, not in detail, maybe just a note, like:

== Companion Books ==

===The Demigod Files===
{{Main|The Demigod Files}}
The first companion book of the series, ''The Demigod Files'', was released
on February 10, 2009, featuring three short stories, various pictures, and
interviews of campers. It serves as an introductory guide to Camp Half-Blood.

===The Ultimate Guide===
This is the second companion book that is to be released in February, 2010.
It is to feature a guide to the gods, the camp, the monsters, the labyrinth,
and a lot more, all illustrated in full color.

Ok, the above serves as nothing but an example, since I don't really do well at encyclopedia-tic writing. However, I really hope that sections or information like this would be written into the article. Thanks.--Mktsay123 (talk) 15:00, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Oh, and BTW, the Character section is placed at a very awkward place...... --Mktsay123 (talk) 15:04, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Okay, I added a section for The Demigod Files. I know nothing about The Ultimate Guide, couldn't find a Wiki page for it, and don't have time to research tonight. I may add that later if I have time, or someone else can get to it first. Also, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the character section. Could you clarify, please? Thanks for the suggestions! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 02:58, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

I moved the "Characters" Section already. It was originally placed at the very end of the article. And about The Ultimate Guide, the only information I managed to get is from Rick Riordan's blog. Quoting information below:

Looking farther down the line, Disney-Hyperion will release the Ultimate Guide to Percy Jackson in February to coincide with the Lightning Thief movie. The Ultimate Guide is a compendium of information and full-color illustrations of Percy Jackson's world, including a bestiary of Greek monsters, and scrapbook of Percy's life, a guide to life at Camp Half-Blood, a tour of the Underworld by Nico di Angelo, a trip through the Labyrinth, and much more. [1]
And finally, Disney-Hyperion will be releasing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide, in February. I just got my first copy, hot off the presses, and it looks so cool! The cover has this fun holographic band of pictures that change as you move the book. Inside, there is a guide to the gods, camp, monsters, the labyrinth, and much more, all illustrated in full color. Beautiful stuff. My favorite pictures are probably the Manticore and Daedalus's Workshop. [2]

That's all for now.--Mktsay123 (talk) 11:12, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do with that information. I've moved the graphic novel into companion books too and will make the character sections collapsible. And PrincessofLlyr, you were saying something about a link (on your post on my talk)... I'm not sure what you are referring to. Please clarify. Thanks, Airplaneman talk 22:54, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Whoa, I just noticed – could the Ultimate Guide be the graphic novel? Sounds like it; release date the same, etc. Unless anyone objects, I'll add it tomorrow (Thanksgiving Break woohoo!) Airplaneman talk 22:56, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Doubtful, cause judging on the way Rick mentioned these two books on his blog, it seems to be completely two different books. Also, according to the blog, the tentative release date for the Graphic Novel is 10/19/10[3]. I'll watch for more information. Oh yeah, I need your attention on Talk:The Titan's Curse, thanks.--Mktsay123 (talk) 12:57, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
I see. I took a look and responded there. Airplaneman talk 02:16, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

There is already a Percy Jackson task force. A task force is pretty much a Wikiproject without all the administrative and bureaucratic work. Just a group of editors working together on a topic. Task forces are recommended for smaller topics, a Wikiproject neither needed nor wanted. – kollision (talk) 06:01, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Characters table and Camp Half-Blood section

I have removed the Characters table and the entire Camp Half-Blood section. These are the two major fansite-looking things. Sorry, I know some of you worked quite a bit on these sections, but I really think their removal will greatly improve the quality of this article.

First, the Characters table:

  • All this First appearance, Undertakes quests and Cousins stuff is fancruft – intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience.
  • ...And it doesn't really do what a Characters section is supposed to do – answer the question "Who is ....?" Take for example, Annabeth. Three extremely basic bits of information is not even mentioned once in this article. 12 year old, girl, friends with Percy. Annabeth could be the 50 year old antagonist of the story for all I know. Once in a while, take a step back and read the article as if you know nothing about the subject. Does it make sense and is there anything missing?
  • The main reason for these problems, in my opinion, is because the character table... is a table. Table are bad for characters sections. You get restricted by the headers and it is not a good way to present Character information. The Characters section should be rewritten as either a list (like in the individual novels' articles), in prose form (a few paragraphs naming and describing the characters) or integrate character information into the plot summary (a brief description following the first mention of the character). Integrating it into the plot summary would be the best way to do it, but the other would be fine too.

The Camp Half-Blood section:

  • All the reader needs to know is what was in the first sentence "Camp Half-Blood is a fictional camp for demigods in the series located off Long Island, New York."
  • Everything else is unencyclopedic fancruft. This section should not be recreated, in any form.
  • I wouldn't use the drawing. It is not an official image, hence it isn't really Camp Half-Blood but a fan's interpretation of it. It is original research.

kollision (talk) 09:56, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the help! I started a possible characters list at the PJTF sandbox, if you (or anyone else) would like to take a look at improving that and it could be incorporated into the article shortly. Cheers! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 19:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, kollision. Now that I look at it, yea, it was fancruft. I think the character list should encompass only major characters, and will change the title accordingly. The "to do" list is great! Airplaneman talk 21:28, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

I Miss the information wether the series is still ongoing or wether book number 5 was the last one. I think this information is quit crucial for a (book-)series. greez --Wuestenschiff Dune-talk 22:28, 31 January 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wuestenschiff (talkcontribs)

There is now a section for it. Airplaneman talk 05:48, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Edit request from for redundancy in "The Lightning Thief" section

{{editsemiprotected}} Hi, I'm a Wikipedia newbie, and I can't make this edit, but if someone who is registered could, it might be helpful to get rid of the redundant "in the end" and "at the end" of the these two sentences in "The Lightning Thief" under the "Novels" section:

In the end it is revealed that Luke, son of Hermes, stole the bolt for Kronos, who is attempting to come back to life. At the end Grover goes off to find Pan, the lost Greek God of nature.

Thanks! loafysam 19:04, 6 April 2010 (UTC)loafysam 19:02, 6 April 2010 (UTC)loafysam 19:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)loafysam

Percy Jackson & the Olympians art education program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

I recently learned that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has art education tours and programs framed around the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Does this belong in the article somewhere? [1] --loafysam (talk) 20:11, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like something we could definitely use. I just don't know which section it would go under. Ideas? PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:41, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm back! School hiatus kept me busy. Do you think it could go under "reception"? Or under it's own subheading, something like "Education" or "Related educational programs"? Those sound kind of awkward, I know...loafysam (talk) 16:51, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} The Titan's Curse was release on May 1, 2007

Not done for now: Welcome to Wikipedia. Current article, main article and your request all state three different dates. Please establish a consensus for this alteration, and then feel free to use the {{editsemiprotected}} template again. jonkerz 09:14, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Done Sorry, I misread the main article. Date is now changed. jonkerz 09:26, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Question

I've just looked at this article and saw that the receptions area needs expansion and also saw all the reception on the book articles. Couldn't some reviews and awards be taken from the books and put into this main article? Derild4921 18:42, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Yes, certainly. Airplaneman 05:23, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

American covers, etc?!

The article has very few files for the American logo and cover, in fact, barely any! Wasn't the series first released in America?!~Wimpy Fanboy chit-chat? sign mine! 18:29, 17 July 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wimpy Fanboy (talkcontribs)

I've also noticed this about the logos and covers. According to http://www.hyperionbooksforchildren.com/contact.asp, the offices for "Hyperion Books for Children"-the publishing company for the series-are in New York, so it's a safe assumption that the series was originally published in America. It might be a good idea to request an image change or to change the image.--Olympian3 (talk) 17:19, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Don't you reckon we should show both the UK and US versions of the title and book in the article? I think the article hardly has pictures and it is too biased on the US side of things. 122.107.158.194 (talk) 05:44, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I think at least one American cover should be there somewhere. --Glimmer721 (talk) 23:48, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Names of demigods

The section analyzing the meanings of the demigod's names seems contrived. If we were to keep this, we would need to make the connection between name meanings and their parents' powers. For example, it references bows and arrows several time for Apollo. However, to a reader who is not familiar with greek mythology would not understand the reference. I do not think this is vital to the article and is somewhat un-encyclopedic. 75.69.129.253 (talk) 02:11, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Negative criticism

There is a lot of negative criticism about Percy Jackson series as well get that in the article too other wise it seems unbiased.-James Pandora Adams —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.176.151.153 (talk) 22:21, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

The Last Olympian

Isn't there supposed to be the last book The Last Olympian in the list of books? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.30.188.107 (talk) 22:39, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

The mark of Athena is not part of the Percy Jackson series. It is actually part of the Heroes of Olympus series. Also the The Battle of the Labyrinth is missing from the list of stories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Program Death (talkcontribs) 05:25, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Alternative The Lightning Thief summary

I have written an alternative summary for The Lightning Thief that, at just less than 300 words, is still longer than the suggested length but is shorter than the previous summary and spares many unimportant details.

Following a fight with Mrs. Dodds, his Pre-Algebra teacher who turns out to be a Fury, Percy discovers that he is a half-blood, a half-human half-god. He learns that his life is in danger as long as he is outside Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for half-bloods in which no monsters can enter its bounds. Sally, his mother, drives him and his friend Grover, a satyr, there, but as they approach the borders of the camp they are attacked by a Minotaur. In the ensuing battle, the Minotaur transports Sally to the Underworld and Percy temporarily destroys it. At Camp Half-Blood, he runs into one of his teachers, Mr. Brunner, who is a centaur named Chiron in disguise, and meets Annabeth. Chiron explains to him that Percy is accused of stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt for his father, Poseidon. Percy receives a quest from the Oracle to retrieve the bolt and journeys into the Underworld with Annabeth and Grover, believing Hades to be the thief. As they travel to the Underworld they face numerous mythological monsters, including Medusa, Echidna, and the Furies. When they confront him, Hades denies ever having taken the bolt and claims that his Helm of Darkness is missing as well. Percy finds out that Ares is in possession of the stolen items and wins them in a fight. He returns the helm to Hades, who returns Sally safely, and the bolt to Zeus. He learns afterwards that Luke is the real thief and has been working for Kronos, trying to give him a chance to rise again. Before he leaves the camp, Luke tries to kill Percy using a poisonous scorpion, which Percy kills after Luke leaves.

Image?

Since this is a US series, wouldn't it make more sense to use the US logo instead of the UK one? Luthien22 (talk) 05:45, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Publisher

The U.S. Library of Congress catalog records for first editions show "Miramax Books/Hyperion Books for Children" for the first three novels (2005 to 2007); vol 4 (2008) "Hyperion Books for Children"; vol 5 (2009) "Disney Hyperion Books".

LCCN "permalink" version of LC Online Catalog records, all for U.S. first editions: LCCN 2005-299400, LCCN 2006-280771, LCCN 2006-35731, LCCN 2007-42957, LCCN 2010-285189.

The first part of the numerical lccn ID is the year the catalog record was created; for volumes 1-3-4 only the source must be Cataloging in Publication data provided by the publisher in advance of any copy of the book. Thus I interpret: in writing the publisher provided "Hyperion Books for Children" without mention of "Miramax Books" (a Hyperion imprint) some time during 2007. The records for vols 2 and 5 were created late and very late. At least in the latter case, presumably after receipt of a copy of the book for the library collection and created by examination of the book title page, etc. Thus I suppose: "Disney Hyperion Books" or perhaps "Disney·Hyperion Books" was the name used in that front printed material. --P64 (talk) 01:32, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Religious specifics

Article says "Some critics, especially Christian critics of Riordan have disapproved of the emphasis on pagan gods in his books." This is needlessly broad. The article should identify which Christian denominations have a problem with the books. 73.137.170.88 (talk) 02:41, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that may be as specific as it gets. It's not really one denomination; and even if it were, critics tend to be individual people who are not necessarily representative of their respective religions. -- 2ReinreB2 (talk) 20:28, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Anyone familiar with this series care to add it to this list??

Types of mythological or fantastic beings in contemporary fiction is a page of, well, fantasy series (movie, TV, written, whatever) and the assorted mythological and/or fantastic critters they contain. This series would qualify. Anyone care to add it? Tamtrible (talk) 00:10, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
