There is a new trend in user interface of the same name. Computing using cameras to recognize multi-time and spatial scale human interaction. There needs to be a page for that too.
The sentence "Perceptual computing is reshaping the way we interact with our devices, making it more natural, intuitive and immersive." is subjective, does not maintain neutrality and does not provide information on the subject. A google search for "preceptual computing" made on 1/17/2013 shows this page as the first result followed solely by Intel sponsored websites and social media results. The search results collectively describe a human machine interface. I suggest the first sentence should be struck in favor of "Perceptual computing is a design method for human machine interfaces which uses the capabilities and constraints of human sensory perception to guide the design of software and hardware based user interfaces."
The earliest record I could find for the keyword "Perceptual Computing" was a highly cited paper from MIT, Though the keyword is present, it does not define the term. Taxonomy
[edit]I have trouble seeing perceptual computing as exclusively a sub-field of natural user interfaces. I'm thinking that maybe the superset is "how computers interact with the world" and the subset is "how computers interact with humans".
To argue for this, I'd start by saying that the scope of "perceptual computing" seems to be computing that uses 3D models of the world created by sensors that include light (including laser and IR) and audio. I agree that the new generation of perceptual computing products (Intel's RealSense, Microsoft's Kinect, Apple's PrimeSense, Occipital's Structure Sensor, Qualcomm's Vuforia, Google's Tango, etc.) will be heavily used for human-computer interaction: face recognition, eye tracking, object tracking, gesture/hand/body tracking, virtual reality, and augmented reality. But there are significant applications in robotics and transportation as well. The 3D models & maps that some of these products create, for instance, will be used by robots for navigation (e.g., currently in use on the ISS) and object manipulation. The same technologies will be important in autonomous vehicles. So we're beyond just interacting with humans. Perceptual computing is letting computers interact with the world.
