Another pre-game custom that has been discouraged by Major League Baseball is the hitting of fungoes. A hitter will toss a ball in the air and hit it against the inclined screen behind home plate. The ball rolls down the screen and back to the hitter. In 1961, a kid sitting next to me in Milwaukee County Stadium was hit by an errant fungo. He was not seriously injured and, a few innings later, received a ball with an apology written on it by Duke Snider. 76.229.178.123 (talk) 19:42, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
