"Inspirations" and "Controversies"
[edit]I've deleted the part about this film being "inspired by the 1997 Hollywood Movie, Mad City". Apparently, John Travolta made this claim in an interview with "The Hindu" where he says "..I am astonished to learn that India's official entry for the Oscars this year, ‘Peepli Live', was inspired by ‘Mad City', my best film as an actor. Please convey my heartfelt compliments to director, Joydeep Ghosh for his excellent sense of cinema.” http://www.hindu.com/mag/2010/10/10/stories/2010101050060200.htm. There are a couple of issues with this statement: First of all, there is no one named Joydeep Ghosh associated with this movie (it was written and directed by Anusha Rizvi). Second, the topic of media exploitation of an individual's tragedy is a fairly universal theme and has been treated in many Hollywood films, the most notable ones being "Ace in the Hole" (1951) and Sidney Lumet’s "Network" (1976); Travolta's movie has similar elements , but the main story elements in Peepli -- farmer suicides, political corruption and an apathetic bureaucracy -- are uniquely Indian so Travolta's claim is a bit of a stretch.
Regarding the "Controversies" section, the similarity to the movie Pakal was mentioned as being "controversial". I've deleted this. Pakal, a 2006 malayalm movie has a similar story in an Indian setting but the director of Pakal has acknowledged that while the themes are similar, the treatment in Peepli was starkly different. http://www.hindu.com/fr/2010/11/19/stories/2010111951380100.htm So how exactly does this fact become a "controversy"? Thoughts, comments welcome. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.56.129.30 (talk) 20:21, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- I have removed the inspiration part from the lead. You must discuss controversial edits first before removing anything. Let's see what the other editors have to say about this. -- - Managerarc talk 21:50, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's fine to retain the part about Pakal, I just don' see it belonging in the "controversies" section. The Pakal director's remarks were not accusations of plagiarism, unacknowledged credit or anything that one might normally regard as being controversial. Move them into a separate section, if you must. I'd drop Travolta's comment altogether, unless you think a comment from Travolta deserves a place in the article simply because he's Travolta. Otherwise, it's irrelevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.56.129.30 (talk) 22:56, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- These are obviously not accusations of plagiarism. So, it can be removed from "Controversies" section but should be included somewhere, preferrabily in a new section. But until the discussions are over, it should not be removed from the "Controversies" section. Arfazph (talk) 12:47, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
