Merge

[edit]

This should be merged because the significance of the character itself, as the article says already, is not very important, despite the scholarly attention. I will do it myself soon as long as there are no objections.Sadads (talk) 02:39, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While I certainly do agree that this character doesn't need an article of its own and that a merge is more than advisable, I find it rather hard to place the information contained here in a manner not awkward within the scope of the Gulliver's Travels article, at least in its present state. One would probably need to create a whole new section titled "Characters" or something of the like and also include some data pertaining to other characters (maybe some summary description of sort, like here) so as to make it stick together. If you're more inspired than I am, by all means, I formally encourage you to merge both pages.

Onomastic realism

[edit]

Seems to me that there should be a note to the effect that "Pedro de Mendez" is not a credible Portuguese name.

  1. "de" is never used with a patronymic (be it Portuguese or Spanish).
  2. the correct spalling for the Portuguese form is "Mendes", and for its Spanish equivalent is "Méndez"; granted that in the time of Swift neither languages had the same clear and strict spelling rules that they gained later.
