References needed

[edit]

A lot of material in the article needs references. Nurg 02:01, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. From the style of writing and nature of referencing, I also suspect that much of the page has been authored by Mr. Moon himself.Te Irirangi (talk) 03:43, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think you are right that it is mainly, if not totally written by Prof Moon but that makes the article more accurate not less. There are many very intersting personal insights that are not likely to be found in publications-the sort of things that are said behind closed doors to avoid embarresment.Prof Moon has been quite conservative in his comments- for example he did not mention the name of the well known Maori women academic who has slagged him off in the media over his book on cannabalism among Maori. A lady who was recently in the gun for allegedly racsict remarks . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.153.154.179 (talk) 02:51, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trim

[edit]

I've just trimmed a bit:

"Moon is no stranger to controversy." - probably true, but the next two sentences do nothing to support this
"Te Ara Ki Te Tiriti ... represented a watermark in Treaty scholarship..." - maybe, but a credible ref woulb be nice
"...became a favourite of Maori activist groups..." - if it WAS good and NPOV then this should hardly be a matter for controversy
"...copies of it were seen circulating in the Foreshore and Seabed Hikoi in 2004" - along with every other book on the subject presumably?
" On the other hand he has been described as New Zealand’s most right-wing historian" - maybe, but the Michele H says exactly that too - but gives no source either (maybe she read it on Wikipedia?)'
"Such labels have not concerned Moon.." - fair enough, but a ref here for this quote would be nice too.

Please check out WP:BLP esp. regarding references for "...negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable..." material. This protects against both puffery and unwarranted attacks.

Catholic missionary contraversy

[edit]

As events have panned out it appears that Moon was correct and King was wrong.Im sure if King was alive he would be the first to put his hand up. In the last few years the (hundreds of) letters of French missionaries have been returned from France are are being slowly translated at Waikato University. Some of the early revelations show that some at least of the early catholics missionaries had very bitter anti protestant/anti English feelings. What is not yet revealed yet is how much Pompelier himself shared these veiws. My own view is that Pompelier had a far more nuanced attitude than his underlings. He appreciated that to make any catholic headway in NZ he had to live with the protestants not battle them. Pompelier pulled his punches and intervened when his missionaries got carried away with their more extreme views and action. This is what happened after the notorious Volkner incident when the local priest seems to have incited violence in the local hapu by pedling false stories about Volkner. When Pompelier found out the truth about the local catholic missionariy's action he moved the priest immediately. He was sent to Australia and later died in France, although local Hau hau continued to spread the rumour that the government had killed him.

Probable copyvio

Copying blurbs from a book is never acceptable and in this case probably copyvio. Dougweller (talk) 09:49, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
